As to answer the OP, there really hasn't been one. Just about every country mentioned on this thread from the US to Rome were in such different times with such different situations it's hard to compare there.
the most powerful ancient country was the roman empire.
the most powerful medieval country probably had to be the ottoman empire, like them or not.
the most powerful up to the 1900's was likely the russian empire, within decades they had expanded all the way into siberia, conquered most niehgboring countries and became a great power.
then the United States in the 1900's was at the height of it's power, and to this day remains one of the few powerful nations in the world rivaling china and russia
And if you'll search on google or wikipedia then you'll find that starting from 0 AD to 2000, India and China have been the most richest economies in the world until ofcourse the rise of Britain and then USA.
