The internet sucks now.
Am I the only one that really doesn't like the fact that every person is able to get online? I was always a nerdy child and my family had internet before my friends so I spent a lot of time on the computer. There was just so much to see and everything was new. Now everything is covered with ads and I get shadowbanned when I don't share a popular opinion.
People used to be able to speak their mind, but now if you don't agree with everything the majority of people say you're automatically hitler. Can we go back to the time before GUIs so regular people won't use the internet anymore? I'll even learn to use my terminal for more than just installing repositories....

I disagree. Why don't you just go back to Nazi Island?

Yes, let's restrict all of the internet to a select few people so you can be a special snowflake.

Well I mean, you could always learn to use a terminal. I even said myself that i barely know how to use mine of stuff other than installing software.

'Shadowbanned'. What's the in-a-nutshell definition for that?

Then grow a spine comrade; and ignore those people.

We can only move forward. Get used to it.

Just cherish the memories.

Terminals will just be an annoying barrier, anyone who wants to use the internet will learn to use one.

Restricting something as large as the internet won't work anyway.

Its true. I used Linux for 6 months and I'm a total idiot. Terminals won't hold back the masses. They'll just watch a 30 second yt video like I did or google the answer in seconds. Don't know what it means but it works most of the time. :)

Have you ever considered the idea that you might not just be able to keep up with the younger, agile generation of trolls that have inherited the internet? I think you need a crash course in being a turd blossum to overcome these challenges.

They'll eat you up man. Don't try to keep up. Sit back, observe and laugh. You can jump in now and then like I do here, but be wary or you'll find yourself being dragged down to a level of memetardeness that is almost impossible to find your way out of. The new generations have made idiocy and annoyance an art. Probably because it was the shortest and easist path. You know how they are.

Usually when you're about to get banned from a site you get a few warning shots first. Shadow banning is where you get banned with no warning. It mostly happens on sites like twitter when you don't share the statusquo opinion.

Unfortunately, there is no going back. Even smaller-level restricted-usage nets are no defense against a generation raised on internet culture, or even advertising. The attacks their are just thinly veiled instead of being outright since there is more supervision. It was that way with the DoD Intranet, it's that way with the Intranet at my company now.

As Surlaw suggests, it is a generational thing more than just everyone being able to get on the internet, and using text-based terminals isn't going to stop jerks from using the internet. What it would do, however, is cause a global economic catastrophe as billions of workers have to be re-trained to use a ****ing text terminal instead of a far more efficient GUI. Pretty sure a nice guy like you doesn't want that to happen.

Vassl has the right idea, here, this is is just something you have to go along with and enjoy the ride. I lose track of more stupid memes every da ythan I ever knew existed, and when it comes to operating an smartphone, I am clueless. As a former electronic communications specialist, I am clueless. I just don't see the need for most of the crap on those phones and have little desire to learn any of it.

But that's just me being a grumpy old man, which I will happily sit back and be until I can slide into a rocking chair and make children listen to my war stories.

Besides, it's not like you don't have anywhere else to go for nerdy fun. Even if your only interest is computers, there are people of every age who get together and just mess around with computers. Building them, taking them apart, writing programs, whatever. They're nearly as common as other nerdy hobby groups, like tabletop gaming (which I do every chance I get) and Magic games (where I'm starting to suck with all the new content but still fighting.)

There's all the community you need, right there. And guess what? Some people are still a$$holes. Some popular opinions, you probably don't want to challenge if you're afraid of it. But at least IRL people aren't usually as bad about that stuff.

Then don't use twitter to share those opinions.
