Progesterone and estrogen / hormones however cause the body to produce more pigment.
If you aren't going through puberty, taking hormones, or on a menstruation cycle, then check for Paget’s disease (breast cancer). However, that is very rare and it's more likely to be one of the other reasons. Still worth checking, if concerned.
