There was quite simply no possibility of the movie getting made otherwise, and not just because such movies were just not done, but the scars of McCarthyism were still quite fresh. Studios at the time would still have the era of blacklists fresh in their minds, and like may other forms of media at the time. Prefered not to tempt fate, and were engaged in self censorship. Just like in television, print, comics, and radio.
You want to credit somebody with getting the ball rolling. Credit the people who had to slip their movie in through the back door, and who had to run a cover up to keep management from ever getting wise until it was too late to turn back.
