if you would like to further entertain this 'weirdo' idea of yours (pardon the term), try to play diablo 3 and learn how the npc sidekick reacts when you bring it to your quests.
the only thing that you can do, imo, is control two characters at the same quest but not at the same time... like playing old nba pc game where you can immediately switch to any of the five players on your side.

but having both characters at the same time...like say
http://store.steampowered.com/app/335840/
or
http://store.steampowered.com/app/225080
Or like
http://store.steampowered.com/app/95400/
without the co-op.
I guess a controller would be mandatory, which could turn off some people.
Yeah... More like brothers and the other one I've talked about: Never Alone
Nice. I haven't played Assassin's Creed Syndicate yet, but I'll check some videos about thar part you said.
Reminiscent of "Head Over Heels"

Note that all three controllers are passed between the two players and sometimes the third controller is deactivated as well. Well, more specifically, which controller controls which character gets changed over the course of the game.
Of course, this is one very specific playstyle of a specific game, which actually seeks to give independent control to all three characters.
