Controlling two characters in a game???
So, I'm a game designer (indie, heh) and I'm writing this game called "Duality". And I'm studying the possibility of making two characters to be controlled at "the same time", do you guys think this is a good idea? Or could it confuse the players (the gameplay)? I mean, there are some games that already kind of used that idea, but I'm not sure if this is the right way to go.

The game is a platform-action game, where the two characters cannot be in the same place at the same time (they are separeted by light and dark, one is at the upper platform and the other, at the lower one);

Help me, guys!

Eh, that sounds like it would be too confusing. You say they'll be controlled at the "same time", but "cannot be in the same place at the same time".

Think about two platforms separating the characters, one's up and the other is down in the screen. That's how they cannot be in the same place at the same time, but you can controll both of them (kinda like Never Alone)
if they are separated by an upper and lower platform, then they are not really controlled at the same time.

if you would like to further entertain this 'weirdo' idea of yours (pardon the term), try to play diablo 3 and learn how the npc sidekick reacts when you bring it to your quests.

the only thing that you can do, imo, is control two characters at the same quest but not at the same time... like playing old nba pc game where you can immediately switch to any of the five players on your side.

So, you're basically making
http://store.steampowered.com/app/223220/
but having both characters at the same time...like say
http://store.steampowered.com/app/335840/
or
http://store.steampowered.com/app/225080

Or like
http://store.steampowered.com/app/95400/
without the co-op.

I guess a controller would be mandatory, which could turn off some people.

Well... I mean, the player wouldnt controll the characters at the VERY SAME time, but it would have to switch characters during the gameplay, like, one is stuck doing something, so the player shall switch to the other character, so that one character could help the other one, somehow... Idk if i'm being successfull in explaining that ideia haha

Yeah... More like brothers and the other one I've talked about: Never Alone

in assassins crred sydnicate you control 2 players.. not exactly simulatiously .. towards the end of the game when you kill the main bad guy(starrick) you controll 2 players killing him

Reminiscent of "Head Over Heels"
The OP's premise reminds me of this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NZP0n-U7u8

Note that all three controllers are passed between the two players and sometimes the third controller is deactivated as well. Well, more specifically, which controller controls which character gets changed over the course of the game.

Of course, this is one very specific playstyle of a specific game, which actually seeks to give independent control to all three characters.

Anyone else reminded of that one 3-day quest in Majora's Mask? Anyway, I think it'd be kinda cool, the idea might wear off after some time though.
