Because that's what they were called in the heyday of Athens and Sparta. You'd go to the forum and discuss things. You'd discuss ideas only to have Diogenes pluck a chicken then present it to Plato as a man because Plato was a Socrates stan and thus deserving of mockery.

Also "restroom" didn't originally refer to the toilet, it referred to an actual lounge, which usually had a toilet available for convenience. Because of that, "using the restroom" became a polite or high class way to say "using the toilet."

Why do Americans call the toilets a rest room? Does it have a sofa or bed in there?
For real, that's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid.
Yeah, it is. The alternative of "bathroom" is only marginally better, in that it kind of applies to some restrooms.

We should just call it the lavatory tbh.

We actually have many names for it.

The bathroom
The toilet
The loo
The bog
The Khazi
The swanny
The ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
The Gary Glitter

There's probably more, as slang varies depending on where you are in the country.
>Gary Glitter
That's like calling it the Jimmy Savile or the Nick Bate.
Except their names are rhyming slang.

such interesting discussions :P
seems kinda odd to name the WC after a person lol.
A bog is famed for sucking things down beyond vision. Surely considering the country has them that a likeness would be formed in slang and later colloquialism.

For a person i doubt has no confusion of the misappropriated use of the word toxic, does beg the question of why the post.
I heard a German call the whole UK a bog

To add to what others may have already said, it is also something which is used by those wishing to make it clear what class they wish to be recognised as, or to make it clear they are not from ‘x’ class. The working and lower classes will use it far more than a middle class person, unless said middle-class is trying to appear to others like they belong to another class.
Why do we call gas “gas” when it’s a liquid? It’s called petrol.
petrol isn't a liquid.
it's money. :^)
