Project Infinity: A Digimon Fangame Discussion Thread
Hello curious explorers of the forums and fellow Digimon fans, I am here to describe, then ask your opinion, on a fangame I would like to create. This is all in concept at the moment, I am teaching myself how to code to make it though. Bear this in mind.

Project Infinity

Camera Angle: Top-down isometric view, similar to Don't Starve
Graphics: Anime 2d style
Game Genre: Sandbox RPG (no planned story)

New Game
You are a human dropped into a wild and largely wild Digital world. Right when you start a game, you will be greeted by a limited character customizer. (A gender, a choice of a few different outfits, a skin color, and a name) YOu will then have a choice between 3 starting locations to inhabit and hunt for wild Digimon. You will get a starter Fresh Digimon to train based on the area you pick.

Fresh to the World
You are now dropped into a plot of land that will serve as your base and your Digi-Farm. (concept is borrowed from Digimon Dawn/Dusk/World DS) An Overseer Digimon (a Digimon that looks over the farm, and is unatainable via any Digivolution, like Calumon) will greet you and teach you how to raise your Digimon and operate the Digi-Farm.

Digi-Farm
The Digi-Farm is where you raise your Digimon, of any stage, so it can eventually Digivolve. To do this you interact with it (play, uplift, insult, pet, flick, or feed) and train it for battle.
-Interaction
Depending on how you raise your Digimon, it will Digivolve into a different Digimon. Example: An Impmon that is raised with kindness rather than indifference may become more compassionate and Digivolve into a more good-inclined Digimon.
-Battle Training
Here you take control of your Digimon and learn how to fight with it. Each Digimon has a set of special skills and battle skills that are unique to that Digimon. Battle Skills are simple attacks that require no Stamina to execute and do varying amounts of damage based on the Digimon and it's level. (Rookie, Champion, Ultimate, Mega) Special Skills are powerful abilities that require Stamina to use. These are sometimes called Lethal Skills, for obvious reason. Battle training also makes a Digimon more combat inclined, and may effect what it Digivolves into.
-Digivolution
Once a Digimon's "growth" meter is filled, it can be Digivolved. What it will Digivolve into is dependent on how it was raised. Conditions that are needed for a Digivolution that has been aquired can be checked in the Digipedia. (basically the Digimon equal to a Pokedex, but with more information) To raise the growth meter to full, a Digimon must be fed data.

(Data is aquired through defeating wild Digimon, leaving Digimon on a farm to interact with it's environment, and breaking down Digi-eggs)

Digital World
Through a doorway you enter the wilds of the Digital world. Depending on your chosen starting Digimon, you will find yourself ona beach, in a grassy plains, or in a dessert. Here you explore and capture or fight Digimon.
-Capture
You summon your *main* Digimon (chosen Digimon to "realize" in combat) to battle the wild Digimon you have locked-on to. Fight the wild Digimon until it appears weakened enough to attempt capture. To do this, have your Digimon grapple with the weakened Digimon. You then take control of your tamer and move towards the captive wild Digimon. You then use your Digivice to capture it.(this system of capture is still under consideration) No Data is aquired through this method.
-Battle
You summon your *main* Digimon and fight a wild Digimon that you lock-on to. Fight it until it is defeated, and it will revert into a Digi-egg, which can be broken down into data later or hatched at the Digi-Farm. Data equal to half of what the wild Digimon possessed within it's body is obtained.

Don't ask this until you have a game, is my advice

You'd most likely get into legal trouble with the company that owns Digimon. That's something you should look into before even getting started with the game.

Precisley why I am here asking what everyone thinks. Because the community itself know's alot more than I do.

I actually didn't think of this (I was preoccupied with the fact that OP is asking questions about something that doesn't even exist yet). I don't think that you, OP, are going to have much luck with the license issue.

Why specifically? A friend of mine mentioned that but I though a free game would be covered by fair use since it's for fun and not actually charging any money. I'm curious as to how a fangame would fall into a different category.

Unless it's free there's no chance and even then I'm not aware of any games using unlicensed material without the permission of the copyright holder on Steam, for obvious reasons.

Yeah. Without company permission, a fan game can not be distributed through a retail service, even for free.

Well, it's better if it's free but it's still legally dubious and the chance of steam accepting it is negligible.

Through the wiki it is then. That is one question answered, thank you.

What criticism or opinion can we really give your idea outside comments on its nature as a Digimon fangame? We know nothing about it.

I'll add the details for it in a bit, I'm doing some stuff in real life at the moment though.

Details have been added, more or less.

The ideas seem okay enough, my biggest concern is that IMO this is far too ambitious for someone who can't code yet and considering the difficulty and cost involved in creating high quality assets and resources for the game.

Only about 50 or less Digimon would be worked on at first, if that effects your opinion. But how do you mean cost? In terms of time?
