eBook readers | eReaders: Are there any without mandatory account registration or background updating/syncing?
I've never liked the idea of such things.

Yet, my physical library is becoming cumbersome.

I've had a quick look, and it seems I cannot avoid wireless connectivity - though, at least I can buy a device with only Wi-Fi.

I need something...

a) where I have manual control over de/activation of Wi-Fi connectivity.

b) which doesn't support mobile phone connectivity.

c) which doesn't require mandatory registration with the producer's/any other online store/facility.

d) which supports the most possible open/licenced [covered by initial cost price of device?] document formats used in the personal computer realm.

e) for which I can merely transfer any supported document format - as one would drag to portable storage media - without being forced to go through a PC-based app for which some internet access is mandatory, under whatever excuse/guise.

Ideally, I'd like a rugged/weatherproof tablet, but the only one I've seen available (through brief searching) is the Kobo Aura H2O, and I'm not sure it meets my transfer requirements.
[I've found online documentation regarding using an Amazon PC app for such but, alas, this also employs unsatifactory mandatory registration for access.]

Basically, it's no-one's business who I am, where I'm located and what supposed demographic I may belong to, discerned from data gathered on the titles I read.

TIA, for any useful/insightful input.

Seems like you have paranoia of the world youre living in...that I've recognised only after a few words, then I remembered this old In Flames track...it fits perfectly ^^
If you want to live in fear and paranoia, its your choice, but actually, windows phones are great, I love my Nokia PDA.
No, I don't have paranoia.
People who believe in "ISIS" and nuclear weapons have induced/programmed false fear/paranoia.
People who believe lines in the sky are "CHEMtrails" have the same paranoia [people, on the other side of the false paradigm - who believe them to be "contrails" - are simply dumbed down beyond sane]... although the truth, regarding them being COMMStrails bouncing the internet (due to orbitting satellites - and any claimed breach of space by mankind - being another total fraud) is actually far more sinister, considering the total technocratic CERN-based lock-down on the way.
I'll leave you to live in fear of fake terrorists, fake nuclear weapons, and fake potential invasions by global regions under the very same command as your own home.
I'll live with the concern that you (and the vast majority) believe in such presented illusions, and thus present a very real danger to the likes of me in future.

ps. Unfortunately, it seems the Nook is Android at its core. However, there seem to be hacking projects underway.

I think, ultimately, I may be out of luck, unless I intend to wipe the Nook upon finding someone else's tried and tested replacement OS install for it.
I see some are already having a try at their own Raspberry Pi tablet projects.

It's not entirely paranoia.

I think what he needs more is the software that circumvents all the conglomerate data collection b/s.

I imagine there is devices out there made by some company that still has some shred of value...but the reality is that they will be bought out and assimilated or force closed eventually.
Yes.
Less and less are available, and will be available in future, as the grip tightens.
In computers, one already has to customise operation of just about everything.
Some people think TOR Browser is safe.
Of course it's not safe. It's based on modern Firefox - which is no longer safe [from the real villians - plugged into the other end of it]
Some people assume all Linux distros are neutral - obviously not knowing that Canonical is a global syndicate gang member.
And I don't know about coding, but I'm sure HTML5 includes a few gaping anuses open to Switzerland.

Yano watched something interesting the other day...

"Take back your power"

Should give it a look-see

Well, given the current state of your wishes and demands, it's clear there is only one option for you. Good old paper and ink, bought with cash (*), anonymously in a small mom&pop store without camera surveillance.

* Get the old bills without the metal tracking strips!

Thought of the day: in a world where every one's daily life generate terabytes of data, those who don't, stand out.

Also: Why the ♥♥♥♥ are you using Steam, which violates every principle laid out in this thread?

You speak as if your comfortable with it. Shouldn't have drank the koolaide.

There are ways to circumvent every system. Should tame that vulgarity, would have thought they added something for that in the koolaide.

You just believe that modern satellite-based telecommunications, including the global positioning system, work by magic, and that the Japanese demolished two of their own cities and incinerated tens of thousands of their people just so they could claim that they were attacked by obviously mythical weapons. Totally sane.

There are no satellites.
So I stated that about the Japanese, did I? You're adding narrative. Don't.
The Japanese didn't "nuke" themselves. The Jesuits detonated masses of traditional explosives at ground level. They weren't "nukes", since they don't exist.
But you can live in fear of them if you so wish, but you'll have to first believe in separate nations [Hehehe. You have no idea of the reality behind "reality"] in order to believe in threats of such imaginary weapons of such outrageous magnitude being deployed.
I'm not here to argue the toss.
You may live under the perceptions you choose.
I care not what attempt at "rational" "reasoning" rejective cognitive dissonance throws up in people exposed to painful truth - that they are merely wholesale slaves under severe perception management.
I've learned to expect all kinds of reaction where "life" is merely an interconnecting self-propagating web of deceit, with supporting pieces formulated and deployed thoughout all fraudulent societal constructs.

If you roll back, you'll see I make the case that my physical library is becoming prohibitively cumbersome.
You'll also see hint that I don't purchase from such entities as "Barnes & Noble" and similar.
I was merely asking for info that maybe, among the plethora of modern nasty beacons/harvesters, some straightforward device, which sticks solely to the tasks it's sold as being for, may still exist in an increasing underhanded tech' environment steered by "The Worshipful Company of Information Technologists".

As for Steam, I was on before I knew more regarding the world of interconnected web/net technologies - for which the coming ultimate purpose has always been on the cards since inception.
Steam is one of only very few online operations I use that are linked to my commercial person[a].
Very few.
It would be unwise of me to add anything else here regarding any relationship between my physical being and the Steam commercial entity.

No, his points are valid.
I've addressed them in my previous post.
He doesn't sound comfortable with it.
The amount of consideration he shows indicates he knows where vulnerabilities are - unlike Jane Spy-Phone Drone: "must have my Socialist Networking fix".
Yeah? how about fully-fledged face-to-face communication, with all manner of extras like facial expression, body language, scent and other, more subtle, hyper sensitivities for discernment included in natural communication.
Hi Deviantchild

I too seek an e-reader that doesn't try to sniff out everything I'm doing. How did you go with your search?

Hey!
I didn't.
I haven't returned to this, as I've been pre-occupied with "fire-fighting" not ending up on the street for the past months since.
However, if you do come up with anything, would you try to return to this thread and add your findings?
I'd appreciate that, because it's still a considered requirement of mine, wanting to read archived digital scans of old and out of print documents that I likely will not own in physical original/reprint form.
We need devkit HW iterations like Raspberry Pi, as much as we need the same for specific MP3 players.

I kind of left the subject with consideration regarding the Nook hacking projects, yet still have to consider writing it off due to being linked to the malicious SRI-tasked-team created "Google" data-harvesting/tracking CERN-feeding project.

ps.
To the guy who remarked regarding my Steam usage: I had Steam before I knew, but I still don't use its more intrusive features and it only has basic commercial persona data on me which I can detatch myself from at any time [you need to know how these fraudulent illusory systems work in order to do so] and, besides, who is to say that the data held is current?
