Mass Effect is pretty watered down IN COMPARISON.
Kotor is quite indepth though and forgetting the theme I would say Dragon Age Origins is the way to go.
They are both fantastic series. Admittedly Dragon Age loses a lot of charm with DA2 and a lot of people felt the same the more Mass Effect went on but they are still good RPG journeys.
Just depends if you feel like some dark fantasy or some tame sci fi.
Hope you have fun either way.
Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age: Origins illustrate Bioware in their prime.
DAO does link to DA2, but mostly in enemies and certain characters, but the main character for each of the game is completely different, so in consistency, you don't have any.
So I think it depends whether OP wants a good long ride in a single game or in a series.
It is also important to note that Mass Effect has a fantastic ability to continue on your save files through all 3 games, so your decisions can take some effect on your environment as a continuation.
Any game that makes you want to reply a save file or restart a game all because you didnt want a certain character to die so bad you actually sat back and thought about who you would sacrifice, that causes memories so strong, like the first time going to the beach on a hot summer, your first kiss, you know your going to have an adventure thats going to form a part of your real world life.
Both these games take you on a ride or die journey.
Do you prefer Sci-Fi or High-Fantasy?
Mass Effect is a 3rd Person Cover-Shooter with RPG elements and classes. The characters and writing for 1-3 are really good (Minus the ending on 3), and nearly every choice you make in all 3 games has an impact. For example, killing or sparing the Rachni Queen in Mass Effect 1 can have repercussions in Mass Effect 3, and of course there's also Romance if you're into that. The characters are also phenomenal, such as fan-favorites Garrus Vakarian and Tali-Zorah, two alien squad-mates that accompany you. Mass Effect 1-2 are available on Steam, minus the DLC for Mass Effect 2, while EA Origin has Mass Effect 3 (and the DLC for ME2).
There's also Mass Effect Andromeda on Origin, which is the latest game in the series, although it's writing is meh in comparison to the original Trilogy. Not to mention the game also has an obvious DLC-Story bait at the end, and no DLC due to the horrible reception of the game. In terms of gameplay it's functional, while not focusing as much on cover as the originals did. There's a focus on gathering materials to craft new weapons and armor, as well as upgrades for your ground vehicle (Which is a callback to the Ground vehicle in ME1). Graphics are definitely better than 1-3, and some of the companions are OK, whereas others are just bland. It's also much more open with classes too, and you can switch from one class to the other, or mix-and-match abilities.
DA Origins is a more traditional RPG game with fantasy races, classes, and skills, which can include weapon or class skills. Like Mass Effect, the writing is good and you have a diverse cast of characters who are your companions in the game, and of course, there's also Romance options here too.
Personally I like the ME Trilogy (Especially ME2, it's REAAALLLY good). While ME1 can be a bit tough to get into these days due to it's age, ME2 and ME3 are much more accessible and provide really great stories and gameplay. To this day the Suicide Mission from ME2 remains one of my all-time favorite video game missions, you just have to play it to experience it.
That being said, if you're more of a fantasy fan then Dragon Age will likely be much more fun for you.
All the Mass Effects 1-3 and MEA have interesting concepts, but flawed execution. The journey is more important than the destination. Well it has to be with Mass Effect, because the endings kind of suck and some more than others,
