Why do people say "good time waster" when it comes to games that they like?
What exactly does it mean and how is it a good thing?

The fact of the matter is, if it is something you enjoy doing, it is not a waste of your time. You don't need to gain some sort of PhD for it to be otherwise.

Nothing wrong with doing something you love, but if I loved (for example) maths or programming even half as much as I love video games, I might not even bother with video games. At least then I could get a better paying job that I like, helped by the fact I enjoy improving my maths or programming for lesuire.
Yeah, but that's the difference. I have a passion for gaming and always have. It is what I enjoy doing and I hope to do more with it. Not like you can't get a job that pays well in the gaming industry, after all.

Not everyone in the video games industry plays video games, or is even that important. I believe even John Carmack himself says his gaming nowadays is forcing himself to play Wii with his son and his friends. Not that there is exactly many openings in the video games buisness anyways.

Generally, 'time waster' means it's something you're doing to pass the time. Your primary purpose in the activity isn't the activity itself, but rather the passage of time. For example, I've had nothing to do over this long weekend, so I binge-watched Big Bang Theory as a time waster. The key thing is, time wasters are *enjoyable* activities, because you lose focus on time and become engrossed in what you're doing (thus accelerating your perception of the passage of time). However, in terms of video games, 'time waster' can also have connotations of a game which sucks you in so that you play for hours at a time, even if you only intended a quick session.

I see. That explains a lot. Thanks!
