Battlefield 2142
I'm interested in getting Battlefield 2142, but I didn't find the game on Steam's store or on Origin's store. I suspect that if it's not in these stores, then the online community is no longer active. Would it also be the case that the game also used GameSpy for their online service just like Battlefield 2? If so, I bet it's not functioning as it used to since they've closed down the service for a while now.

Are there any digital copies available?

There may be player run servers. But I am not highly sure if that is legal.

Thanks for the post. In regards to the digital copy, I'm still interested since I can always play on GameRanger. Seems like the games listed in that link are going downhill from here.

Well i know that im probably a bit late with that but the communities of both BF2 and 2142 are still active even if the games arent officially running anymore. Blue Entertainment managed to get BF2 running on their servers and put up a battlelog page for BF2 ( battlelog.co ). You can get the game from there for free or install the patches if you already installed the full game and then you'll be able to play there. Now they are trying to do the same with BF2142 but i dont exactly know if they are going to release a free working version of it. The Battlelog for BF2142 is existing as well ( bl2142.co ). I would keep an eye on that or if you are planning to buy BF2142 on amazone or get the old version of the game somewhere else you can also play it with the fix of the dethklok or novgames community (i personally recommend novgames) here is the link to the guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/Battlefield/comments/2gs3tt/2142_complete_guide_to_play_bf2142_post_gamespy/
Both ways should be legal as far as i know and both communities are more or less active although there are only a few servers and there might be a day or two when less players are online but in any way its enjoyable
