Why? It's not like everyone's constantly shoving the meme down your throat? Unless you live in an area where that meme is both love and life, then I would understand
The 'ge' could be hard or soft sounding depending on where it appears (at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a word). 'gy' is the exception to always be hard sounding.
For example:
gem, gerbil, energy (hard)
vs
merge, fudge, hedge, ridge, badger (soft)
At the beginning or middle of the word, you are correct in suggesting it should sound like 'geh'.
However, it's near the end of the word, so becomes more soft and starts sounding more like a "j".
