I use Avast! Antivirus and occasionally run Malware Bytes every month or so.
Never had a problem with viruses and Avast is really easy on the CPU.

Hitman Pro seems to be able to find all sorts of stuff, if you think you're infected, use Hitman pro and it will completely obliterate the viruses.
Also Super Anti Spyware seems ok. But just stick to Avast it should be fine.

I don't care for the others, they'll hobble their free-products so hope you'll buy their paid versions (I don't like, nor trust that buisness model). At least MSE is the best version the company can offer, and it plays better with Windows, AVG always had conflict issues for me. The only reason it can't come with Windows is a stupid patent dispute with McAffe or Norton.

To be honest, the firewall in my wireless router is probably enough really.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft even recommends to use a third party AV. That being said, I just use MSE since it just integrates itself as if its part of Windows and it's not in your face all the time. I'd really only use it to scan downloaded files, but I'm not sure how much I trust it for that. Virustotal is probably a better idea.

Avast is good but personally I like Panda Security best, it literally saved my computer twice, you also get a free month trial with no pop ups!

After doing some research, Avast had the best detection rate while using the lowest amount of resources when compared to other antiviruses (such as Antivir and AVG). AVG used to be garbage so I never give it much thought any more.
And Kaspersky is Russian garbage.

Kaspersky, just purchase the 2012 edition on the cheap and get a free upgrade to the newest edition
