I also use Firefox alongside Noscript and Adblock, it seems to stop most things at the front line.
It's free and has auto updates, i've been using it for years and never had a virus.
Hey, I've had it for a few years and haven't had a virus, so it works for me. I also didn't reccommend Norton, I only said he should check out Malwarebytes.
I have never heard a single good word about either Norton or McAfee's products.
Bulldog antivirus is another free one but it is horrible, it filled my computer full of malware. I actually had to look up on google how to get rid of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing because when i deleted it, it was still on my PC.
Even John McAfee has been slagging off the company he founded:

I would recommend looking at Consumer Reports or talking to an IT professional where you work. People on forums don't know squat, including me, so I consult Consumer Reports and talk to the IT guys at work.
I've told friends using AVG, McAfee, and MSE, than Norton blocked infected emails sent to me, and they had no idea they had been infected, just that their computer seemed to be running slower and slower.
Comodo as a firewall:
Eset Nod32 as antivirus/ Microsoft Security Essentials is an alteranitve(Notice, both are lightweight antiviruses)
CCleaner: for system optimization
Well, AVG and McAfee aren't that great and MSE doesn't scan all e-mails. I'm not even certain it's compatible with all programs/services.
Also, did you ever accurately conclude that the viruses you were receiving from "their e-mail addresses" were actually originating from their systems?
