After doing some research, Avast had the best detection rate while using the lowest amount of resources when compared to other antiviruses (such as Antivir and AVG). AVG used to be garbage so I never give it much thought any more.
And Kaspersky is Russian garbage.
the only downside to Avast is the change in terms over the last couple of years. You can't opt out of sending them data, so basically, if you're on a ♥♥♥♥ connection don't use it. It'll make your bandwidth usage go way up vs using something like zonealarm or malwarebytes premium.
To be honest, the best antivirus is common sense. Still, you should try giving Malwarebytes a try, it's free even if it doesn't continually scan the system. I've also had Norton for years and never had a problem with it.

I also use Firefox alongside Noscript and Adblock, it seems to stop most things at the front line.
AVG.
It's free and has auto updates, i've been using it for years and never had a virus.
Norton's not that great for what you pay for, and it is a resource hog compared to the alternatives. Malwarebytes is a good recommendation though.

Norton is terrible in my opinion, it actually slows your PC down. You don't need to pay for anti-virus on your home PC.

Hey, I've had it for a few years and haven't had a virus, so it works for me. I also didn't reccommend Norton, I only said he should check out Malwarebytes.

I have never heard a single good word about either Norton or McAfee's products.

Don't worry mate i didn't say you did.
Bulldog antivirus is another free one but it is horrible, it filled my computer full of malware. I actually had to look up on google how to get rid of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing because when i deleted it, it was still on my PC.

Even John McAfee has been slagging off the company he founded:

Norton is definitely the best for protecting your computer, but the cost and system resources it uses are higher. Others may be better for cleaning up an infected computer, cheaper, and use less resources, but Norton probably offers the best protection. I've used it for over 15 years, gone where angels fear to tread, and never got a virus.
I would recommend looking at Consumer Reports or talking to an IT professional where you work. People on forums don't know squat, including me, so I consult Consumer Reports and talk to the IT guys at work.
I've told friends using AVG, McAfee, and MSE, than Norton blocked infected emails sent to me, and they had no idea they had been infected, just that their computer seemed to be running slower and slower.

unless you use Norton free at which point it's basically a damn virus, won't remove itself entirely upon uinstallation, doesn't remove viruses and malware just detects them, and spams you with ads.
My combo:

Comodo as a firewall:
Eset Nod32 as antivirus/ Microsoft Security Essentials is an alteranitve(Notice, both are lightweight antiviruses)
CCleaner: for system optimization

Well, AVG and McAfee aren't that great and MSE doesn't scan all e-mails. I'm not even certain it's compatible with all programs/services.

Also, did you ever accurately conclude that the viruses you were receiving from "their e-mail addresses" were actually originating from their systems?
