Apparently some people don't have an internal monologue.
They can't hear their own voice in side their heads when they're thinking about things. Like "better pick up some milk on the way home" for example.

No idea. I can't wrap my ahead around it.

How do you think without an inner monologue?

first person, or birdview.

I met an NPC at the weekend.
Some guy comes up to me holding a can of beer in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other and asks me for money for "A train ticket".
Guy had clean clothes and is clearly not homeless.

Surely he would have some money if he hadn't of paid for that beer and the cigarettes.
I swear i could actually hear his 2 brain cells rattling around inside his skull.

I would have bought him a bus ticket to California. And he would have been thanking me.

edit: with birdview I mean I look at situations/world from a flying bird perspective. interaction with others it is really in first person only for me.

Studies show 3/4 people never have an inner monologue or cant grasp their mind around the idea of it. These same people also are not capable of rationalizing decisions much like an animal. They will take a piece of cheese now rather than a whole block of cheese in an hour.
The NPC theory is real.

I don't think its that many. Also it has no direct correlation with intelligence. Some smart people just don't think with a "monologue", their thinking is non verbal.

I think once you start having it there is no turning back. You can't "shut it down".

Im sure its right there on google. You can do it.
I dont hold peoples hand anymore looking up stuff just because I said it. I just end up spending my life doing extra work for people who wont learn anything from it anyway. I decline your challenge. But its all over the net, its the basis of a joke called the NPC theory. Then people called liberals NPCs. Then they started making the Skyrim videos. But it started with the study. Thats why I posted them.

I can switch it on and off. Sometimes that function is viewed as an aspect of me, other times I make it something "external" and then assume both roles. A lot of the time it's just music, for whatever reason at the moment it's the Mystic Cave zone from Sonic 2. If I focus and flip the mental switch so to speak, it can be silenced completely. The question is whether you're just filtering out the input, or if it's a number of things working together like an actual object, and by silencing it you're "dissolving" these faculties back into their base parts, which can then be repurposed (similar to transmutation or sublimation). It's also possible that the "internal voice" is just an amalgamation of introjects from childhood. On the other hand, it could be not unlike vision, where you have a sort of field in the conscious frame where you can pick out individual aspects you want to focus on.

Anything you make your brain do for long enough, with few exceptions, it will begin to do automatically. see eg Tetris Effect, some adaptations are faster and more durable than others. I will say, in the few times when the internal monologue was involuntary, it actually gave very good advice. So possibly lack of inner speech has a sort of suppressive effect on insight and awareness, therefore could be conditioned or a post-traumatic effect.

I suspect the internal monologue is a higher level stable macrostate of a more primordial set of functions. So the prominence of the inner monologue, as a sort of constellation, is not the only arrangement or possible developmental branch. More research would also have to be done on eg aphantasia, and whether they can be taught to visualize. Supposedly these functions come from the anterior cerebellum... at least in part, so looking at malformations of the upper cervical spine would be a start. The other thing to consider would be an overlap with a sort of synesthesia.

I would say it's bad if someone IS their internal monologue.

To me it sounds like you have a condition that is known for intelligence, altho millennials think it means ignorance. The great musicians heard music. If you dont make music now you should try.

Well I've read other studies and I think that 3/4 stat is false. The burden of proof for an extraordinary claim is on the claimer.

OK, here we go: Russell T Hurlburt did a study on.. 30 students. Yes, 30. A tiny sample size. Most other studies belive MOST people have some internal dialogue.

Also, nowhere does it mention intelligence.

What makes you think I care? I was joking around with someone else. The whole things based on a joke. And you come in saying nothing to try to bum people out like "dur its false." then editing what you say after you look it up. Then saying "It was tiny dur". I dont care about your problems man. What do you want? Do you have anything to actually say other than bothering people? I dont care about the actual study. Thanks for aruging and looking it up cause its all you know how to do. Try to enjoy life man and lighten up.

It's an auditory trait (self-talk), As a primary learning style, Auditory is the least common of the 3 majors (visual is the highest, then kinesthetic). As far as hearing voices...don't let the dog tell you what to do. :)
