What are some good horror films with an emphasis on subtle scares?
Out of the recent horror films, I think Insidious did a good job with this. For example, the scene when the mom checks on her crying baby and in the background window the face of the creepy old lady is staring at her. That scene literally made me scream because I did not expect the scare to play out that way.

Maybe sci fi horror but still unsettling is Existenz (1999, David Cronenberg)
A game designer on the run from assassins must play her latest virtual reality creation with a marketing trainee to determine if the game has been damaged.

If you enjoy that, I would also suggest Video Drome (1983, David Cronenberg)
A sleazy cable-TV programmer begins to see his life and the future of media spin out of control in a very unusual fashion when he acquires a new kind of programming for his station.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086541/?ref_=nv_sr_2

Tetsuo, The Iron Man (1989, Shin'ya Tsukamoto)
A businessman accidentally kills The Metal Fetishist, who gets his revenge by slowly turning the man into a grotesque hybrid of flesh and rusty metal.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096251/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Think of a live action version of that final showdown at the stadium in the AKIRA manga and youre in the same territory...
Also a sequel:

Tetsuo 2: Body Hammer (1992, Shin'ya Tsukamoto)
Sequel to "Tetsuo" this time has the Iron Man transforming into cyberkinetic gun when a gang of vicious skinheads kidnap his son.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105569/?ref_=tt_rec_tt

and also:

Tetsuo, The Bullet Man (2009, Shin'ya Tsukamoto)
Losing his son Tom in a hit and run triggers violent emotions in Anthony, whose body begins to transform. When the driver who killed Tom reappears, Anthony mutates into a mass of metal - a human weapon fuelled by an uncontrollable rage.

Try The Babadook, It Follows, Oculus and Black Swan. These should fit in the requirements you ask for. Please don't forget about Silence of the Lambs, Ringu and Blair witch project.
I love every one of those movies

Try this short film:

AM1200 (David Prior, 2008)
Haunted by recent events and on the run, a man finds himself the unwitting pawn of a possessed evangelical radio station and like his unfortunate predecessor must ask himself whether it is better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.

This one is best if you dont watch any trailers before hand, its quite creepy!

It's more of a sci-fi film and it's in Russian with English subtitles, but I thought that the 1972 version of Solaris was pretty unsettling. It's also a very long movie and some people might view it as boring, but I enjoyed it. It's about a psychologist who travels to the space station near the planet Solaris where people seem to be having inexplicable hallucinations. The newer Clooney version is all right but much more Hollywood-ized and made into more of a romance story.

Another good movie along those same lines is Moon.
Solaris (1972) is amazing, one of my favs.

*high five* I read the book first and I think that was even creepier, especially with the way it described how the planet's surface changed depending on the person. I think it's a must for anyone who likes sci-fi literature.

I also second the Jacob's Ladder suggestion from earlier, especially if you like Silent Hill.

Yeah, he also directed Stalker, another one I need to track down.
