You only have to take a look at the defund the police moment. So many emotional people jumped on the band wagon of defund the police and even the politicians jumped on board wanting to look good for the voters.

Well, fast forward a number of years and you see what defund the police really means, it means more crimes, more murders, more sex crimes, more robberies and more low level crimes. And now the same politicians seeing how their cities have turned out want to refund the police, can't make this crap up.

The funny thing is that some people who praise reason and critical thinking don't actually practice what they say. Part of critical thinking is understanding that you could be the brainwashed one, the stupid one, the unreasonable one, and tackling the questions and conversations no one wants to talk about.

Some people are so beyond reason that they choose to die on the hill they stand on no matter what. They will interrupt, become erratic, and turn away from evidence that challenges their beliefs. Their lives may be boring, and want to feel on being apart of something bigger than themselves to fill in the empty void. Their beliefs are their entire identity, and striking it down will drain their will to find other meanings in life.

Emotion is very powerful indeed. I've found far more success with rhetoric than I have perception, and that's not very good. I think, in truth, debate has become too frustrating, ad-hominem for people's tastes, so they'd rather default to emotionally powerful statements.

It's an addictive mentality too, you get a far quicker response calling some group a name on Twitter, than you do writing an essay on your concerns.
