No.... there are no Dismaly "good" "Star Wars" movies... not a single one.
Obnoxiously preachy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that was "woke" long before woke was even a thing.
At least with the Disney Star Wars trilogy, Ghostbusters 2016, or Black Christmas 2019, I can say "Well, these might have been decent movies if...[insert some major fundamental change]." Not so with this one.
i'd say Higher Learning (1995) was prophetic.
i didn't think it was too big a deal. the themes it dealt with -- black student athletes harassed by police, lonely white male students becoming radicalized by white supremacy, and a young woman being a victim of date ♥♥♥♥ -- are common things found in places of higher learning even today.
i certainly did not think the movie pretentious at all. everything was quite relatable. and I didn't think it was politically correct as those themes were controversial in 1995. John Singleton wasn't being politically correct in his portrayal of the characters. I think you're wrong about that.
but you labeling it as 'woke' tells me everything I need to know about you.
Strongly disagree. In fact as far as I'm concerned, the only major character in the entire film who wasn't either a cardboard cutout or a strawman was Ice Cube's character, but only because the movie wasn't afraid to show him being an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on a couple of occasions.
Themes aren't enough to carry a film with (mostly) poor acting, wooden caricature characters, and a halfassed, anvil-heavy plot.
If you want a good example of "good actor slums it up", witness Roy Scheider phoning it in on Jaws 2, versus his awesome performance in the original film. Or go watch Ben Kingsley embarrass himself in Bloodrayne.
