No because to be a country you must have a permanent resident and a government to run it. Sadly there isn’t so it’s just a piece of land.

Tho some countries do wanna lay its claim but it’s not official.

Well, the ideas of permanent residence and government are potentially gray enough that you could probably claim Antarctica has them. After all, with a couple thousand people, someone has to be making and enforcing rules, and there are probably a handful that have been there for a long time.

More importantly, a group of residents hasn't declared sovereignty and pressed for international recognition.

It's "Internationally Administered."

It's pretty much recognized as international territory, just only used for research purposes. No country would be allowed to put weapons there or launch nuclear weapons from there, etc.

Also, Antarctica is just a massive amount of glaciers on top of land that is always covered by ice. It couldn't be a country even if people wanted it to be. Delivering food would be difficult, it would be difficult to grow it there without damaging the ecosystem, also good luck trying to build four walls without a penguin inside it when you finish the last wall.

There's a massive "wall" closest to South America. Most people have to fly there. Disembarking from a ship would be difficult, you would need...probably a helicopter and hopefully no bad weather near del fuego. I guess a longer flight from south Africa would be safer since the weather doesn't suck below Africa the majority of the time.

So that’s why it’s so hard to sail to Antarctica back in the 1800s.

I mean, is anybody allowed to launch nukes from anywhere? If they can, does it matter if they're allowed?

Kind of like "rules of war." You know my goal is to kill you so I can steal your money, right?

Oh yeah it's practically impossible to really sail there now unless it's an ironclad submarine, then I guess snow mobiles and then a heli or some climbing gear.

I feel bad for those who tried to sail there centuries ago.

The Antarctic Treaty signed in 1959 describes how the Antarctic continent is parsed out. It involves the 12 countries that were around it at the time.
