What’s the point of consoles?

What’s the point of consoles these days? People get milked to play online. Back in the day consoles where just here to have fun. Easy plug and play and what is now? Xbox with f* up drm and monthly fee to play online and sony with 80 bucks games and a monthly sub to play online….ridiculous.

Yes, or you can just install Linux and run it via Proton for zero extra American super-ducats. It has a Gold rating on ProtonDB.[www.protondb.com] Of course that wouldn't really have helped in 2014 when Proton didn't exist, but neither did Jurassic World, so it's still fair.

Also, if you bought the xbox for $500 in 2014 instead of this PC, you would have spent $540 to Microsoft at this point just to be able to play online. With that you could have bought separate copies of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11 and still had enough left over for two full priced games and double bacon cheeseburger meal.

Then we enter the realm of complex compatibility stuff which is another reason people get consoles. You know what works and what doesn't rather then needing to go down the rabbit hole of stuff that probably works but may not and there's always the possibility that an update somewhere could break something. Of course that can happen on Consoles as well but then at least you can talk with other people who have your exact hardware to find a solution.

What's the point to spend and play online? It's a console. So play it locally with friends and don't subscribe the online thing.

If the non subscription games are expensive.. well it has always been that way. Without the online feature the games will also be expensive. They sell a high-end hardware at only few hundreds, and the rest is earned through games.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not faulting anyone for playing on consoles. They are absolutely simpler, and some people don't want to have to think about specs or graphics settings or control layouts. They just want to play the game. That's absolutely fine.

I'm just saying, you asked for a $500 PC from 2014 that could play Jurassic World as well as an Xbox. There it is. You can argue the pros and cons of console vs PC separately.

It's a lot easier to put a disc into a ps4 and play it right away, and know that it'll work. As opposed to pc where specs exist, you may spend awhile in settings tweaking stuff like shadows or view, or if the game will even run to begin with without crashing.
PC may be better in terms of pure power, though that also requires you being able to drop twice or even triple what you would on a console to get to that point, but consoles are just a lot simpler for the average consumer to wrap their heads around.

But that’s the beauty of pc gaming. To have control over your gaming experience to mod stuff etc

Once VR kicks off on PC as the standard it's over. Consoles will be gone. Nothing could really save them short of becoming just PCs with the game logos on them.

like at this point it's like saying why buy a motorcycle when you can buy a car if at some point the motorcycles get so expensive you may as well buy a car for extra benefits even if just a little bit more.

i mean sure motorcycles have some storage transport you and are "fun" but at some point people start giving a crap about convenience and multi tasking.

Hell, PlatinumGames at one point said that they wanted to put as many of their games on PC as they could, though their main focus moving on from NieR Automata were console-only game releases. Expect Sol Cresta and Babylon's Fall to be used as excuses for them to only make games for consoles.

It's still pretty crappy tbh. The creators of Tales of Arise have shot themselves in the foot for an excuse to stay on consoles, and three times, too.

We could also be doing a much better job at telling the devs to continue their PC support, because console elitists are demanding that their ports fail. See my previous examples of how their wish got granted.

I don't exactly look forward to buying Sword Art Online games just to even ask for future Gundam Battle games after SD Alliance but I gotta anyways because same developers and because I chose to game on PC, Artdink will expect Gundam fans to also like SAO.
