Why are so many modern developers obsessed with putting ugly characters in their games?

By ugly; I mean characters that are not pleasing to the eye. Games like horizon zero dawn, mass effect andromeda, last of us 2, various indie titles, etc. All have really ugly and hideous main or supporting characters that physically hurt to look at. They're not gross like horror movie/game monsters. But designed to be off putting in a way. They give me uncanny valley vibes. Like they are supposed to be human, but not actually. They look like malformed or corrupted versions of humanity, like there's something wrong with them, something evil and dangerous.

On the flip side, I dont like anime waifu gacha games either. Something about how flat faced anime characters are, just creeps me out. I dont hate anime. I used to love naruto and dragon ball back in the day. But I grew out of it.

Oblivion characters were ugly because back then the concept behind that character creator tool was too ambitious compared to what they were able to actually do with it. It was not intentional, so it is a completely different thing.
It would be probably too ambitious even today. In Skyrim the character creation tool works differently and give you many more different types of presets for every feature to choose from, probably if it was the same a Oblivion characters would still look as bad as in Oblivion even now.

I noticed that too, Devs just fear the cancel culture, if they put a female avatar in the game and she looks awesome! like we want her to look ffs .... Devs hear a roar from the older Karens kraken stinkers, so instead they put revolting crazy looking slob avatars in the game that barely even look human. Problem solved ... and this is a testament to the cowardly game developers these days.

Imagine how hot avatars would be 20 years ago in todays tech? Dev's would actually go to prison now in 2022 for the exact same ones ... no joke, and even if they dialed it way back, they would at least face legal problems and want to jump of a ledge.

we are all beautiful now and we all equally get beautiful ribbons ... Hot Brazilian models that live vegan and exercise and have dewy glowing skin and speak 5 languages are NOT hotter than a 300 lb alcoholic bi polar woman in a mobility scooter, her one swollen filthy boil covered leg is equal to the hot models two tanned toned legs, while they do graceful hot cartwheel on the sand, she should do them with shame! for attentions seeking and acting more hot than homeless dudes, and for not eating enough spork sandwiches.

That's a fact of science now, you can read that in school books.

Yup, agreed, plus Sony censors games not only sold on the PlayStation consoles, but all assets used in ports which can include PC ports of Sony exclusive games and more.

OTOH some prevs have done disgusting things with data from games including making nudes of the actress who was used in making the last 3 Tomb Raider games (a young model at that.)

Yup, agreed, plus Sony censors games not only sold on the PlayStation consoles, but all assets used in ports which can include PC ports of Sony exclusive games and more.

It's not about having an all beautiful cast of characters. Although that would be nice. It's about, not having physically repulsive characters. I'm a huge fan of god of war. The only reason why I didn't play the newest one was that ugly female character who's son you gotta kill. Again I dont remember the names. I just saw some promo clips and gameplay and was turned off.

My guess is the developers are trying to be a tad more realistic or are trying to give the message of "Good people aren't always beautiful", things along those lines.
