Why are so many modern developers obsessed with putting ugly characters in their games?

By ugly; I mean characters that are not pleasing to the eye. Games like horizon zero dawn, mass effect andromeda, last of us 2, various indie titles, etc. All have really ugly and hideous main or supporting characters that physically hurt to look at. They're not gross like horror movie/game monsters. But designed to be off putting in a way. They give me uncanny valley vibes. Like they are supposed to be human, but not actually. They look like malformed or corrupted versions of humanity, like there's something wrong with them, something evil and dangerous.

On the flip side, I dont like anime waifu gacha games either. Something about how flat faced anime characters are, just creeps me out. I dont hate anime. I used to love naruto and dragon ball back in the day. But I grew out of it.

It's not about sex. You can admire something beautiful without being sexually attracted to it. I love ancient greco-roman art. Not because most of the statues are nude. I appreciate the skill, the detail, the effort went into making the marble come to life.

Yeah, it does sound like somebody hurt you. Nobody said anything about a narrative, and here you are going off on it. People that don't look like super models still exist and there's no issue with them existing in games, but that's a narrative to you? When it's reality? Hm.

It is all a matter of subjectivity, but most of those characters look in my opinion, atleast like a young adult (most of them much older)

Google it and you will see too much focus on those apperences or a few quest about females being power, enough to take away focus on the actual gameplay... sadly..
People however always have a choice and I respect that, if they don´t like a genre or a style, then it is perfectly fine not to play (or watch for that matter)

Most of them appear to be truly adolescent, somewhere in the 13-14 range at best.

I could actually determine a scientific, physiological development, basis for their age using data already have. That might be interesting, but I haven't automated the process yet. (The reason for knowing and having this info was I've been thinking about making a stand-alone character generator... I have all the data I need, just no coding experience.)

"Real" facial characteristics and relationships between certain facial features change with age. The skull also develops in very specific ways, some individual areas of bone developing along a faster acceleration curve than others. This is how, for instance, the FBI/Law Enforcement publishes "aged pictures" of missing children. It's a pretty fascinating thing, to be honest and is fairly well studied, with decent data to support it.

Individuals don't really vary much in this regard, but race is a factor as well so there are racial differences in how certain landmarks are expressed/emphasized. It's how we can tell someone is Indonesian versus Nordic or African versus Mongoliod.

Two key facial features right off the bat that are very noticeably "adolescent" are the forehead height in relationship to the rest of the face and the smaller size of facial features relative to the whole "face." Those are intrinsically linked to children and early adolescence.

Discordant bits that "don't fit" there are jaw prominence, jaw width, and chins - These are generally pretty closely related. In most cases, the noses are far too long for any of the accompanying features that are meaningful to either "sex" or "age." (Artistic "longface" disease...)


Come to think of it, these are very badly done "female" figures/pics, after all...

However...

Artistic Context is important. And, at least according to the comments, if these are all supposed to be females we need to see what the "males" look like to make an accurate judgement whether or not these are worthy. Not being familiar with the game, I don't even know what keywords would yield a useful result.

I disagree, they all look mature ingame, maybe you just have a certain "picture" about how adolescent look like, but I can tell you, they don´t look like any adolescent here, that is for sure.
If you look at the male characters, they have the same style and all of them are also shorthaired (that is a engine and design limitations and a tad bit of lazyness)

To those of you equating sex with beauty. That's not always the case. Something can be beautiful and be completely divorced from the context of sex itself. Such as; beautiful flowers in bloom, or birds displaying their plumage ,or mighty and majestic wild animals. All are pleasing to the eye. No sane person would associate the aforementioned examples with sex.

A more immediate comparison would be the difference between Windows 7 and 10. I love windows 7 and it's eye candy, AERO interface. Windows 7 is stunningly gorgeous. It's pleasant to use and makes me feel happy to use it. In contrast, Windows 10 is flat and ugly. It causes me slight mental distress when using it. I cant stand using when I have to. Windows 10 is an ugly, ugly operating system. The colors are gaudy. It looks like a rejected children's toy. Or something from the web 1.0 days.

The personal definition of beauty still lies in the eye of the beholder, personal bias does indeed play into what someone finds attractive.

I want to say that Supergirl wears quite a bit of makeup in the comics but in Injustice 2 almost nothing. Also in the game, she had pants instead of a her iconic skirt even though she never had pants in any media when the game came out except for a spacesuit in one comic. It's not really her character to look like how she did in Injustice.

I think there are multiple reasons for why these kind of things happen.

1.Games become more realistic

2.People complain about unrealistic body standards and I previously talked about how this hurt the Barbie doll in a thread I made

3.Femininity does not have respect
