jrpgs are not rpgs
Im tired of pretending jrpgs let you roleplay. They dont.

Games like Baldurs Gate, Morrowwind, Neverwinter Nights even World of Warcraft, are far more suited to the title.

Weebs may get mad, but what ROLEPLAY happems in a Jrpg? Nothing! Theyre more akin to chess but with a story.

You’re roleplaying an established character.

Persona is a jrpg.

Not trying to start a war, but it's just different kind of roleplay. In JRPGs you are playing a preset/predetermined role, rather than one where you play your own character. It's not as flexible, yes, but the player is still assigned a ROLE all the same.

So any Japanese game then is an RPG. ANY game is an RPG by that weak definition because all games with characters put you into their shoes.
Round based combat does not automatically make your game an RPG.

Oh. Someone who doesn't know what RPG means.

Role Play Game

Mario may as well be a Role Play Game if we're using weak definitions. Which is what the usual expectation is from JRPG gamers.

Yes, although from a roleplaying perspective I find Isaac slightly weak as there’s limited backstory for me to work with regarding his character, and my roles are largely determined by RNG. Although the same could be said of any dice-based game.

Maybe genres themselves are dumb marketing terms?

No, because the mechanics also define the genre. Experience gain and related skills, equipment slots, inventory management, crafting where it exists... those are some of the traits defining an RPG.

By that Definition Resident Evil is an RPG because you manage inventory and can make bullets.

Dont know why some say you play a preset character in jrpgs. I played plenty ones where you can create your own guy or preset unnamed/silent characters like in persona. But i agre they are maybe more casualized and not that deep like a baldurs gate. The witcher isnt a rpg either and many call it that

Nope. Mario isn't a role playing game. Mario has no role he just jumps on heads.

And in Final Fantasy 7 Cloud has no role he just swings his sword at things.

Alternatively you could take FF14 and poof you actually make your character.

Following that definition, literally every single game ever made is an RPG though.

Dont get me wrong im not denying Japan can't make role play experiences either. But I just hate it when people come along and tell me their heavily linear stories with linear no choice character development options are full blown RPG experiences.

A wizard can have a number of roles, damage dealer, healer, ccer. A tank has a role to soak damage and protect wizard from interrupts. See? Those are the roles you are playing. Your job that you do. The specific tasks that make up your playstyle. That is what it means.

Are you able to play an RPG and not be so Meta about it? I can tell you've never touched a RP Book in your life with that comment.
