The only thing I find weird is the obsession with video game dogs. People make a big deal out of being able to pet dogs in games, and treat a dog being killed in a game as like the worst thing ever.

No other animals get that sort of treatment, at least not on that level. (Although you can now pet the pet companions in Dead Cells, which include a sentient mushroom and a mutated shrimp creature.)

Nothing wrong with that.

It is their money to spend.

I rather have people spend 10k+ a year on their pets than people who have pets and do not take care of them properly - i.e. not picking after their trash, raising aggressive and out of control dogs that end up killing or disfiguring other people, etc.
