2. The books are still there. No one's changed the books. No one is subverting Tolkien's works. The shows and films don't change the books. The shows/films are just different interpretations of the text.

I would not be surprised if the books got corrected in some aspects or even outright banned in some cultures in the next 5-10 years.
We have not reached the current max of this generations trend, but like everything else, it will have to make room for something new in 10-20 years from now

I would like to champion watching the actual show, which I did earlier today. As such I can make insightful comments like "Sometimes the set and costume design are at odds with each other" or "Man does Elrond look like Robbie Rotten or am I going blind?"

Edit: I would also like to champion not watching it, which is also an option, but means you can't really critique it that well.
