Do not play it using it's default settings. Do not. With those settings, it's a "This is how someone tortures someone else just using a video game."
Do not do it.
Instead, you need to create your own customized settings, preferably on a custom single-player server. (I guess you can do that on PC standalone? I dunno - Played it on Console, so could do it on console, but PC users had to jump through some hoops at that time, IIRC. May be different, now.)
Note: At the time I played, versioning across sale-plaforms was even different. So, one had to have a Microsoft distro to set up local private servers for oneself and a friend or some such, which makes no friggin' sense, so I hope they changed that. It's a very weird developer, to be sure.)
I used a set of options settings that was at least partially formed from this vid, but I did research pretty extensively for each setting as well as read over a large number of suggestions before I decided on my own.

ARK... Well, at least the version I played, "could be" a decent game. It's certainly a game one can sink a lot of hours into and it does have lots of things to do and places to explore. At its roots are Crafting and Exploration with a huge dose of "Pokemon-Dinosaur Collecting." You end up having to capture/train dinos for their abilities you can then turn to fulfilling your survival, crafting, and exploration needs.
It's a UE4 engine put to a use that's not quite what UE4 was meant to do. Being such a thing, there are... certain issues that could crop up. (At least in my version, very likely with all still, though, unless they've made very deep engine changes.)
One thing to look up is the command sequence to "repopulate" all the Dinos on the planet. Why? It's a UE4+ARK issue due to how ARK spawns dinos and how UE4 handles cells and worldpop constraints to reduce overhead. In a nutshell, it means that one can end up having certain regions and their population sort of "break down" and desirable critters may be very difficult to find. Or, everything there will be far too dangerous to handle, since... it ate everything else...:)
Anyway, it's a decent game provided one is willing to customize the options/server and do some occasional maintenance. I gave up on it, but played it long enough to get my money's worth, I guess. (I even think about firing it back up again, but frankly I just got too frustrated with it back then and don't want to have to restart.)
There are a lot of dinos to kill, but only in the South Pacific.
