Finally my own country gets something right this time at least.
Good.

Now we just need to stop making games like it period, or else the bans will sour international trade and harm independent developers and growth industries like Poland and Ukraine.
good. it was a mistake of a game and blizzard should be ashamed of ever trying it
If only more countries followed their lead.
Why they banned it?

Lootboxes/microtransactions I assume
It’s a type of game designed to steal people’s money, to which there is a direct entertainment connection.

Continuing to support them means encouraging an end to public entertainment outside of class-based socialization.

Soon the only way to play a lord in a videogame will be to be one irl, and they’ll be legally allowed to pay someone to ban you.

But is not the only game with such things, isn't it?

Those countries ban all those games. Those governments believe their citizens are too stupid to be trusted with their own money.

The problem aren't adult citizens. The problem is that companies perpetuating lootboxes are targeting children. A demographic with a still not developed sense of responsibility. If lootbox-holding games would have an ESRB Adults Only/ PEGI and USK rating of 18+, there would be... less issues.

Aren’t Belgium and dutchland kinda big in the european gambling scene, despite banning it for their citizens?

Gambling is still very much legal in Belgium. Only difference is that their laws encompass online gambling especially in games pretty well. Diablo Immortal can still be be available in Belgium if they get a license & adhere to the brick & mortar system.
Ah, I see.

So they’re bidding up the cost of entering their market, and don’t really intend to ban it.

Unlike Australia’s banning RimWorld to oppose chinese cultural products and, um, avoid acknowledging one of their most profitable national industries.
It's a bit of a misleading title, since Belgium and Netherlands have already started to regulate lootboxes for being the gambling, that it is, for a few years now.
As a result, Activision Blizzard simply didn't release the game in these countries, because Diablo: Immortal is nothing more, than a F2P vehicle for lootboxes and microstransactions. A release there would have been pointless or worse, made it even more obvious, how much of a predatory, manipulative scheme it all is.
Who even IS the target audience for that game, not counting the compulsive spenders who'd pump thousands of dollars/euro into it? I mean... the main selling point of Diablo as a franchise is a rather dark setting, which is now actually rivaled by Path of Exile and Grim Dawn. From what I've seen, Diablo Immortal looks more like a distant relative of Torchlight II. So if the style is not its selling point, is it really only specifically aimed at big spenders?

New players, much like the Wii. Great way to profit off an established brand that’s having problems with older fans.
