When a cat dies - how to find out if it has pain? (it's not the cat on my profile but another)
Hi everybody.

In the last weeks the cat of my mom dies. And like many creatures the cat does not die quick. So it eats less and less. Walking is not easy. Full drama.
Now she asked me if i think the cat suffers or if it is ok to let it live.
The sad thing is that cats sometimes purr if they are excited or have big emotions. That's at least what some pet doctors say. I don't really believe this because it is definitely wrong that a cat purrs when it is excited.
Another cat we lost we gave in the doctors hand...
Perhaps the best would be to handle the pain / give medicine. But up to now I have not heard that there exist medical treatment against pain in the case of pets.

What do you think?

I welcome especially answers from people who own cats or saw a cat dying.

I have had 5 cats in my life. And I have never seen a cat start purring without being pet before.
But if I pet this cat it begins to purr in most cases. Like any other cat.
And I know also the case when a cat is enerved it does NOT start purring even if you pet it. Instead it runs away or scratches you.
This is why I think it is nonsense to say a cat purrs when it suffers.

I don't know what to tell you.

no problem. In opposite to my mum I make no big drama of it. It will die anyway. I guess within the next 30 days.
I have read the text. I can confirm that cats begin to start purring if they want sth.
One of our cats, but only one female cat begins to purr when she wants to eat. True.
The other cats meow in this case.

These people mean that animals can't think about their situation.
Animals can't plan sth. At least the vast majority.
Animals are also not aware of their coming death. That's a clear disadvantage of us humans, we know that we wil die some day and we think a lot about it ;-P
But: Pets can feel pain like us. For this reason they do not need to be able to think complex.

Feed it to a dog. Unless it has some kind of a disease or infection, in which case just kill it with fire.

Cats will usually try to hide pain from their owners. And I've actually found that they're even more likely than normal to purr when I give them attention is such situations. If you can easily tell that it's in pain, then this has probably been going on for quite a while and it's finally gotten so bad that the cat can't hide it from you any more.

Cats do purr for a variety of reasons. And those that say they can't reason are silly. Cat purr when they are happy, mad, sad, hurt, scared. Their purr has a kind of calming effect on the, and on humans. Look it up, if you care to. My cat is always a face hugging lap magnet when I am tired or depressed, and just herself when I am normal.

With an older cat, I know some want to hang on. I did. But my Sadie *Fat Kitty FTW!* loved me for 18 years. We slept together, she flopped out and watched T.V, just like I did. We anticipated each other, and were always there when we needed the other.

But at the end, she had so many urinary tract problems, she had difficulty walking and doing any of the things she always did. She was hurting so bad at times she couldn't finish walking across the room, or even climb into her bed. And she tried so hard, every day. Even the other two cats knew something was really wrong and would pile around her, licking and rubbing up with her so she wouldn't feel left out or alone.

The last time she got sick, and she tried to crawl to meet me as I came in and all she could do was talk to me, and try and inch her way forward, I knew it was time. I held her the entire time, I refused to be anywhere but holding her. She was my oldest friend, and I said goodbye to her, laying on a bench, her on my chest, stroking her.

♥♥♥♥ me. I am actually crying. I miss my cat that thought she was a person, who could watch tv, and strike up a conversation and expect answers, who shared my pillow every night, amd demanded her own spot at the dinner table. She was a saint.

But if you are a good owner, you can tell. You can see it. Do the right thing.

Don't tell me you never wanted to set one on fire and watch it burn.

Every reply I can come up with is a ban offense. I didn't care for you. Now I simply pretend you don't exist. Works for me.

Fine, if you don't want to waste the meat, you can just skin it, gut it and make stew or something.

But then you will miss out on the fun. So if it is healthy, just give it to a pack of dogs. Might want to take out its legs/eyes first to ensure the kill.

Agni is perhaps thinking that I would have more emotions than other people only because I own a pet. :steamfacepalm: Agni you have posted so much inappropriate comments that it's easy to report your posts as trolling.
Rowdy: "Meowmeoooow meow"
ok Rowdy, perhaps this person has psychological problems and I should tolerate this.
But I think the discussion rules are clear.
Perhaps I should ask steam. Or perhaps later.

Don't let your cat suffer. Euthanize. If it's in obvious pain and is suffering, please man up and put it down.

You can report anything you want. I can report your post for harassement or something for example. Not going to have any effect either way, but you can report.

The discussion rules are clear, go re-read them.

I mean you can do all those things to just about any pet. This is just low quality b8.

Not bait m8. Cats are evil and should be made to suffer.

As someone who has done a fair amount of infliction...I can safely say that cats are evil. How dare it scratch me whilst I drown it?
