Why Can't We Take a Joke Anymore?
I don't feel that we as a society have the capability anymore to take a joke. Even big market news groups such as CNN get their tongues wadded up over a meme that some teenager made about them. People consider the ''okay'' symbol as a symbol of white supremacy, and edgy humor is considered insensitive and makes the person saying it completely stupid. For the most part, it is. But there was once a time where it meant a lot more.

Mark Twain once said, ''Comedy = Tragedy + Time'', a quote that has resonated with me for a long time. I grew up with humor, as you most like did as well. We might've all watched Rhen and Stimpy, Cat Dog, or even Futurama or the Simpsons growing up. I loved those shows, and I frankly loved repeating the jokes that the older demographic based television shows made, (Most I didn't understand.) And yet now we have people actively protesting the shows that we once loved. Which leads to dark humor.

People with common sense know that a dark or edgy joke is what it clearly states, A JOKE. Nobody's getting hurt, nobody's being turned over because of it. We all told our fair share of dark humor in school, don't lie. We all did. (I can't tell any right now because this would be taken down.) Yet it seems as if the youth of today takes that and throws it all away.

The media only cares about the youth of today, (Primarily 11 - 13 y/o.) And with humor that WE enjoyed seeing growing up still on the platform, parents monitor that humor, they think ''I don't want my child exposed to that!,'' and they stop their child from watching. This loses companies whom invest in these sights money, which is why some people like the rise of major anti-violence communities for the internet arose, or even Article 13. They make CERTAIN that we can't have our humor that we did back in the day, which leads to the most recent forms of humor nowadays.

To the people who stuck by and read this whole thing, (Most likely nobody) I'd love to hear opinions below. But for now, our comedy has been condensed to day care humor. We have to listen to terrible puns and irony, and if anyone makes an edgy jokes people ♥♥♥♥ their pants. The 11 - 13 y/o youth I told you about have created their own dark humor (Because humor will always live on) and the key factor is: THEY'RE. JUST. KIDS. They don't know how to make proper humor unless they're truly gifted. They can't figure out how to lean away from ''Fortnite'' or other ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game references. Yet there's still some leverage to the humor, regular everyday memes. Memes, are like you and I. We don't at times see eye to eye with them, yet we still have some type of connection. Memes are the soul's right to breathe and be heard, it's sad it's left to just memes, but it's a start.

I feel terrible that most of us are too sensitive to take a joke nowadays, but at least communities such as the Steam community are okay with some of the humor displayed, where free speech is able to be expressed. Well, maybe without the last part.

Eh, I feel it's the opposite.

When someone makes an "edgy" joke and someone gets offended, people rush to defend the person making the joke and condemn those who get offended. Not everyone is going to like a joke.

That's the point, yet some people go out of their way to ban or shame the person over the joke sometimes. It's sad.

Yeah, maybe. It really depends on the joke for me. If it's really offensive or in bad taste, I think it's fair to shame someone for making an offensive joke.

My real problem is when people act like no one can tell a dark joke anymore, which isn't true.

Because too many parents tell their kids that they’re special and give their kids everything they want, creating a generation that doesn’t understand “no” and thinks the world should give them everything they want.

A joke needs taste and a purpose if it's to be called "dark satire".

It also shouldn't be targeting an individual or group of people, rather outside of that, such as a stereotype. Mocking that stereotype to the extreme till it appears as just a joke and stupidity to actually think in that stereotyping way. The purpose is to actually crush the stereotype in that case.

I don't believe many understand the basics of what dark satire is... go watch some South Park.

Ugh. I hate the "muh free speech" argument.

Free speech doesn't mean freedom from consequence.

I just think people were taught to ridicule people who experience a normal human emotion. It's okay to not be okay with something, and going against that just pushes people into extremism.

It's not like people go against comedy shows and performances they don't agree with. But when it comes to real things in our actual lifes you'll always find people who have different opinions and perspectives and you shouldn't try to discredit them or their feelings for your own personal comfort.
Well said.

Users toss it around way too much on the forums crying out "why you censor me!"

Married ... With Children would be banned and deemed offensive in today's world. In fact, Married ... With Children would sooner be banned than pornography.
Who's that riding in the sun?
Who's the man with the itchy gun?
Well, who's the man who kills for fun?
Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad!
A little touched or so we're told.
Killed his wife 'cause she had a cold.
Might as well, she was gettin' old.
Psy-cho Dad, Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad!
He's quick with a gun, and his job ain't done.
Killed his wife by twenty-one
Shot her 'cause she weighed a ton
Psy-cho Dad, Psycho Dad, Psycho Dad!
