Why Can't We Take a Joke Anymore?
I don't feel that we as a society have the capability anymore to take a joke. Even big market news groups such as CNN get their tongues wadded up over a meme that some teenager made about them. People consider the ''okay'' symbol as a symbol of white supremacy, and edgy humor is considered insensitive and makes the person saying it completely stupid. For the most part, it is. But there was once a time where it meant a lot more.

Mark Twain once said, ''Comedy = Tragedy + Time'', a quote that has resonated with me for a long time. I grew up with humor, as you most like did as well. We might've all watched Rhen and Stimpy, Cat Dog, or even Futurama or the Simpsons growing up. I loved those shows, and I frankly loved repeating the jokes that the older demographic based television shows made, (Most I didn't understand.) And yet now we have people actively protesting the shows that we once loved. Which leads to dark humor.

People with common sense know that a dark or edgy joke is what it clearly states, A JOKE. Nobody's getting hurt, nobody's being turned over because of it. We all told our fair share of dark humor in school, don't lie. We all did. (I can't tell any right now because this would be taken down.) Yet it seems as if the youth of today takes that and throws it all away.

The media only cares about the youth of today, (Primarily 11 - 13 y/o.) And with humor that WE enjoyed seeing growing up still on the platform, parents monitor that humor, they think ''I don't want my child exposed to that!,'' and they stop their child from watching. This loses companies whom invest in these sights money, which is why some people like the rise of major anti-violence communities for the internet arose, or even Article 13. They make CERTAIN that we can't have our humor that we did back in the day, which leads to the most recent forms of humor nowadays.

To the people who stuck by and read this whole thing, (Most likely nobody) I'd love to hear opinions below. But for now, our comedy has been condensed to day care humor. We have to listen to terrible puns and irony, and if anyone makes an edgy jokes people ♥♥♥♥ their pants. The 11 - 13 y/o youth I told you about have created their own dark humor (Because humor will always live on) and the key factor is: THEY'RE. JUST. KIDS. They don't know how to make proper humor unless they're truly gifted. They can't figure out how to lean away from ''Fortnite'' or other ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game references. Yet there's still some leverage to the humor, regular everyday memes. Memes, are like you and I. We don't at times see eye to eye with them, yet we still have some type of connection. Memes are the soul's right to breathe and be heard, it's sad it's left to just memes, but it's a start.

I feel terrible that most of us are too sensitive to take a joke nowadays, but at least communities such as the Steam community are okay with some of the humor displayed, where free speech is able to be expressed. Well, maybe without the last part.

because the age of being politically correct already started decades ago.

That age has started when we climbed off trees/crawled out of the sea/were created in His image/whichever origin of humanity you subscribe to.

Just the definition of what is or isn't "PC" has been changing through the ages. And there were always people who took it too far, and people who were obnoxious about opposing it.

Yeah, basically this. It wasn't always called "political correctness", but every single group of people and every single society/civilization has had some standards as to what was or wasn't acceptable.

And these standards are NOT linear, nor are they necessarily even logically consistent.

And of course, these standards change all the darned time.

Memes are the death of comedy, just take 5 mins to have a look around OT to see that.

We live in a society where words hurt more than actions.

Not that in the past was better but hey around 20 years ago (blog post happening now) :

I was like 17, in Italy you are either Christian, Jehovah Witness or a son of nobody now with the new totally not imposed multiwhatever-trend is a different story but whatever.
On secondary/middle school you can choose to take religion classes or not and a good chunk of my class choose the latter
The teacher one day kindly ask us to stay in class cause she wanted to talk about modern day society, we all agree then 5 minutes of talk later she starts her very own version of the spanish inquisition:

Ask us why we are not taking her religion classes
She doesn't accept "just want to chill out at school gym/yard or outside school premises" as an answer
She doesn't accept "not interested anymore" as an answer
She ignores classmates answers whom at the time were 19 and they completely had, by the effin law the ability to assume legal control over their persons, actions, and decisions
She freaking interrogates us asking if our parents and relatives were practising catholics or not
Not happy she also takes "believers but not practising" as invalid answers
Imagine Terminator 2 scene where Arnold goes "why?" on that very moment she was like that, spouting one why after another

Course people started to raise their voice and leaving, so she cooled down a bit and finally "interviewed" me, despite being aware that during cathechism classes I was somehow problematic, I just couldn't follow them, I was tired, I didn't want to be there as every week we were talking about the very same topic, had this book and something else with me since I was 6 years old, one day I ask if we were ever going past the same discussions and both priest and catechist started to give me odd looks, I also asked if I could just stay at home and take the Confirmation pronto with no problems and they noped...So from that day on I took those classes as a joke, sitting there for presence and reenacting religion MY WAY. Course every now and then I was sent straight to the priest, he didn't give me a BJ nor wanked my tube, I was there just to skip classes by walking back and fort between classrooms. Finally Confirmation day happened, took the godly slap and called it quits, even told both of my grandmas that I was done, don't count me for any kind lithurgic activities no more, cya maybe at my matrimony or someone's funeral but that's it, just don't count me in cause I was finally done with it.

That radical shoe knew all of it, after all two of our catechist had to quit due me being a butt
So when asked, I told her that there were higher chances of me believing aliens than believing something written in a book from they very own convenience, even told her that I always saw religion as a form of conscription and when she got back to her senses she asked me what I really was and then, from the back of our classroom two good friends of mine:
Silverkite is a buddhist !
No, Silverkite is buddhist but also the sole son of OUR Demon Lord all of this while mosh pitting and spouting satanic rhimes...
Entire class me included started to crazily laugh, but she didn't, she was dead serious staring us with the one mile stare that only apecrap Crusades war veterans have, so not happy or sure about me being REALLY serious about it, she asks me the very same question adding if I really was a satanic buddhist monk.

So I get up, greeted her with Spock hand salute and left classroom while mumbling random Journey to the West quotes

Tragedy is that she was also a lets call her a good friend of my grandma (just for her money, nothing else cause she wasn't there for grandma's funeral) and she basically told everyone at the church that I was satanic buddhist monk, basically the whole town started and still gives me odd looks. I still dress either entirely in black and alternate red or white shirts just for a change of tone, I still shave my hair off and Mrs hoe still stares at me with pure hatred in her eyes

OP
Its not the joke they hate, its the fact its well executed and everyones laughing at it they cant handle. Its always the reception it receives that threatens most.

Jokes can hurt

If that's the most hardship you've had in your life you sure got it easy. Words hurt more then actions? or the true fear of a threat? I'm sorry, I don't even see the need to respond to such rubbish. I don't think you know how badly pain can be or how awful it is to be fearful for your life. Ever experience the pain of being literally burnt? and you think a NAME hurts more? excuse me, I'll see myself out

I just don't like jokes. I like offensive humor in movies, games etc. but I think jokes in particular are mostly dumb.

Edit:
Jokes from comedians are ok because they're actually funny.

Good comedy is based on having a deep enough insight into society that truths from a unique perspective can be explored, and the uncomfortable truth rings true which is why people laugh.

One side has taken control for so long that society is now built on a pile of lies which are incredibly fragile, and so no questions, no dissent is allowed, and so comedy dies.

I've been saying that we were going this route for a good many years.

I watch a lot stand up comedy, and there are a good amount of big names in the stand-up comedy scene that refused to do college shows simply because college kids these days are so easily offended by everything.

The one that comes to mind is Jerry Seinfeld. I remember Even back in the late '90s, early 2000s, he publicly said he would never do a college show again because they're so easily offended. I think these at worst he used were, " Can't take a joke. "

Because there is value in victimhood in this culture of outrage. Once upon a time, it was heroes that were lauded.

Now we celebrate victims; "so brave" for dealing with things that make then "uncomfortable" and all of that crap.

If WWII were to happen today, all of Europe and The US would be speaking German in 6 months with the attitudes people have.

Nah. Not German. Russian. Which is cool, as I already know German so it'd be a new language.

Also, heroes, bah. Everyone's a victim in war, except for the folks calling the shots.
