Why Can't We Take a Joke Anymore?
I don't feel that we as a society have the capability anymore to take a joke. Even big market news groups such as CNN get their tongues wadded up over a meme that some teenager made about them. People consider the ''okay'' symbol as a symbol of white supremacy, and edgy humor is considered insensitive and makes the person saying it completely stupid. For the most part, it is. But there was once a time where it meant a lot more.

Mark Twain once said, ''Comedy = Tragedy + Time'', a quote that has resonated with me for a long time. I grew up with humor, as you most like did as well. We might've all watched Rhen and Stimpy, Cat Dog, or even Futurama or the Simpsons growing up. I loved those shows, and I frankly loved repeating the jokes that the older demographic based television shows made, (Most I didn't understand.) And yet now we have people actively protesting the shows that we once loved. Which leads to dark humor.

People with common sense know that a dark or edgy joke is what it clearly states, A JOKE. Nobody's getting hurt, nobody's being turned over because of it. We all told our fair share of dark humor in school, don't lie. We all did. (I can't tell any right now because this would be taken down.) Yet it seems as if the youth of today takes that and throws it all away.

The media only cares about the youth of today, (Primarily 11 - 13 y/o.) And with humor that WE enjoyed seeing growing up still on the platform, parents monitor that humor, they think ''I don't want my child exposed to that!,'' and they stop their child from watching. This loses companies whom invest in these sights money, which is why some people like the rise of major anti-violence communities for the internet arose, or even Article 13. They make CERTAIN that we can't have our humor that we did back in the day, which leads to the most recent forms of humor nowadays.

To the people who stuck by and read this whole thing, (Most likely nobody) I'd love to hear opinions below. But for now, our comedy has been condensed to day care humor. We have to listen to terrible puns and irony, and if anyone makes an edgy jokes people ♥♥♥♥ their pants. The 11 - 13 y/o youth I told you about have created their own dark humor (Because humor will always live on) and the key factor is: THEY'RE. JUST. KIDS. They don't know how to make proper humor unless they're truly gifted. They can't figure out how to lean away from ''Fortnite'' or other ♥♥♥♥♥♥ game references. Yet there's still some leverage to the humor, regular everyday memes. Memes, are like you and I. We don't at times see eye to eye with them, yet we still have some type of connection. Memes are the soul's right to breathe and be heard, it's sad it's left to just memes, but it's a start.

I feel terrible that most of us are too sensitive to take a joke nowadays, but at least communities such as the Steam community are okay with some of the humor displayed, where free speech is able to be expressed. Well, maybe without the last part.

I'm not here for your benefit; you replied to me, not the other way around. I came to post my opinion, like everyone else. You then came along and told me what you thought I meant, and you were wrong about it. It's not the end of the world, it's a simple misunderstanding, but there's nothing to dodge, and this posturing is tiresome. Have a good day.
In the future, then, you should avoid ambiguity in what you say, and if you have no argument or reasoning behind your opinion, then I can just dismiss it.

I was going to make a very long post about how society works and how the current cultural, etnical and religious grouping can be linked, but then I saw it was focused on America.

Then I saw no point.

And in future, if what you want is to for someone to elaborate on what they've said, then I'd recommend politely asking them to elaborate on what they've said, rather than jumping right to accusing them of claiming something they didn't. Glad to be part of such friendly advice-sharing.

As for dismissing what I say: of course you can! I dismiss what people say on OT all the time; it'd be pretty unhealthy to actually take on board all the awful garbage that gets posted here. I was posting what I think, not asking anyone to agree. If you don't think it's "okay" that people get called out on their racism etc, that's your business.

I'd once again ask you to state opinions as opinions instead of as facts. The fault for the misunderstanding is all on you.

Well, you're entitled to that view. But it's not my obligation to share your view, any more than it's your obligation to share mine.

What in the sentence "That's okay" implies an opinion? There's no ambiguity.

I thought it was generally accepted that everything posted on a discussion forum is an opinion, unless stated otherwise. If I say "Team Fortress 2 sucks", that shouldn't be taken as an undisputable fact.
Tch, I was seeing how long I could keep him going once he said he was done.

The fact that it isn't a claim of any objective quantity. If I had said "most people think this is okay", that would have been a testable claim of fact. "That's okay" is just a subjective statement, like "There's no ambiguity" or "The fault for the misunderstanding is all on you", or "Saying 'that's okay' implies a consensus'". These statements are you offering your view. I don't need you to preface them all with "I think", because we're all here saying what we think; it's redundant.

Pick up a newspaper, flip to the opinion section, and observe as writers proceed to not start every sentence with "I think...". It's entirely normal to not spell that out for people. It's respectful to readers to treat them as having that level of literacy, and it saves a lot of space and ugly repetition, too.

You should look right above you to see how you could have made that much more succinct

I think the irony in OP's post is that the most common users of racial slurs and similar rude words are said age group, despite them not knowing what those words mean.
And how did they learn such words? Because their parents said "screw it", booted up their IPhones to do whatever, and left their child to be taken care of by the internet, and then get angry when their innocent child who has no idea whatsoever does something stupid such as click on a suspicious link or swear in front of their parents.

Oh, and it seems the most common solution these days is to over-react:

Your ad was shown to a person who that ad is relevant to, but the video they were watching should've raised a red flag? PULL ALL YOUR ADS OFF OF YOUTUBE!!1!!!1!!

Some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ are leaving predatory comments on vids featuring children? DISABLE ALL COMMENTS ON ALL VIDS FEATURING PEOPLE UNDER A CERTAIN AGE!!!
This one bugs me the most, especially considering the easiest solution is to ban said person from commenting. Also, what about the predatory comments on teenagers trying to build a small channel? My GF was receiving said comments, and YT did nothing, simply because she wasn't a small child...OK.

Sorry/thanks for reading through my personal opinion/rant. :P

1. not everyone finds the same things funny

2. "it's a joke" is not a good justification for being obnoxious
So they have a right to ruin the joke and parade how terrible it is while shaming the person who made it?

Yes, people indeed do have that right, as in, it's not illegal to do so.

Of course I'm not saying "it's not illegal" is a good reason to either make a lame joke, or to shame one for making a lame joke, but it's definitely not illegal.

The person making the terrible joke ruined it, not the person criticising it. We absolutely have the right to hold people to account for their poor behaviour; if they feel ashamed, so be it, that's something you're supposed to learn from.

Here's a better question:

Why can't people take responsibility for their own words and accept the consequences?
Amen!!
