what's heavier? a kilogramme of steel or a kilogramme of feathers?

Steel. Feathers will take up more volume, which means that some of their volume will be further away from the center of Earth so the gravity pull will be less....so the scale will show less. Or it would if anyone had a scale that precise.

Thing is, kilogram is the unit for mass, not weight, while on a scale, you get the weight.

Obviously if you were telling the joke you would know the answer, don't worry no one is doubting you :D
To ask which mass is heavier given equal mass (you used fake units of killogramme anyway) is meaningless unless you indicate which one is in a gravity field and how strong it is. OP, you totally failed science.

The op's question is the same as what's heavier a pound of bricks or a pound of feathers. And no matter how it's formed or what material is used the answer is always the same. A pound is a pound no matter what. So both the bricks and the feathers weigh exactly the same, as both are a pound.

Weight has to do with density, mass and weight (9.8ms^2) (coefficient of gravity) acceleration. feathers per volume there will be much more feathers than the overall quantity of steel.


1kg of still will be far more dense and occupy a smaller space than say a kg of feathers classical case of direct variation where the mass of the steel increases the mass of the feathers to match it increases significantly.
1kg of steel is higher in density therefore more feathers are needed to match the mass of the steel.

Basic physics.
Chicken feather = 74g (unsure probably much less)
Steel = (9.37CM^3) (74g of steel)


So 9.37CM^2 = a tiny cube of steel relative to the volume of the feather.

Oh one must not forget "steel" there is about 20 different types of steel some much more dense than others.

One unit of steel is more massive than one unit of feathers(Unless you've got some really big birds). OP's question was about which of the two masses is heavier(Under the effect of a gravitational field which relates this to weight instead of mass).

Mass is the same.

1kg = 1kg
Weight is the same F = MA

F = 1000g * 9.8m Therefore Force(weight) = 9.8kN (Chicken feathers) ∴
F = 1000g * 9.8m Therefore Force(weight) = 9.8kN (Steel) ∴

Steel therefore pushes down with the same force so does the chicken feathers therefore they are equal and the same.
