Well, that and anime openings/endings.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is a DIY Proctologist
video game scores are still music! the same as a movie score! We even take game audio classes for this very reason, as well as with your typical foley and sound effects, etc.
Once you drive a car you often learn new songs.
But later, when you listen to this songs in reallife, you associate them with the game..
but the question can´t be answered for a simple reason people have different opinons
for example Some people say Rock isn´t music others say Hip Hop ain´t music
in My opinion Yes video game music is Music
but The Ultimate Answer is Both
Yes it is music and no it isn´t music

Depends on what you mean by "contemporary".
There are really two kinds of music in general, AFAICS.
One would be the stuff that's made for no particular purpose other than trying to make money: they hope to get fans, they hope it gets picked up by radios, and they hope it sells a lot of CDs. That stuff doesn't really work for me at all.
The other type is something I'd call "supporting music" -- it's used in movies, TV shows, games etc. There is the occasional exception, but most of these pieces do not stand on their own; their purpose is to support the ongoing scene. Even to an extent where I've played games where the music was actually giving me the first cue that enemies are nearby...
Contemporary = present time.
"Real music" = the ones you hear in radio, MTV. Purely for listening.
Video games would fall into supporting music, yes.
My point is video game music > present day "real music".
As I said originally, this is my opinion of it.
