Young people and old movies
Why do young people hate old movies so much? Trying to get my teenage kids to watch a movie that is older then 1990 is like pulling teeth. I have to practically strap them to the couch and force them to watch it. What kid literally needs to be forced to watch the original star wars trilogy, or the wizard of oz? If the movie is black and white then you can forget it. I could put a gun to their heads and they still wouldn't watch it.

I dont remember hating old movies when I was a kid

They have their own standards. Can't change that by force.
You should let them watch the garbage that modern movies tend to be so they will have a new found appreciation when they see old movies. That's what worked for me
Nah I love the Hollywood classics from before I was born.
I'm 26 years old, and the reason I don't like movies made before 2000s
is not just because of the picture-quality, but it's because the camera is too static.
You don't have cameras diving into explosions or fancy movements like in
Total Recall (2012) and modern action films. I need that

I'm 33 and I'm the exact opposite. Corny CGI special effects ruin new movies for me. I want to see a real life explosion with a real life stunt man jumping through it.

I've made this argument with them. They dont want a good story told to them. They just want a stupid CGI ironman on the screen with stupid CGI fight scenes from beginning to end
I don't know man. You couldn't get me to lunch The wizard of Oz when I was younger. That was monkeys Creep me right the hell out.

That's for others I don't know. I mean they weren't movies but I grew up on The rifleman and gunsmoke and The Munsters on The Addams family and those sure as heck came out a long time before I was born.

once upon a time I try to compile a list of older movies I think most kids should be exposed to.

Here's a few samples...

The Goonies
The explorers
Flight of the navigator
Indiana Jones and the last crusade
NeverEnding story
The princess Bride
Spaceballs
Who framed Rodger rabbit
An American tail
Harry and the hendersons
Gremlins
Stand by me
Labyrinth

there are so many just outstanding films just in the 80s.

If you normalize it, and just say "I'm gonna watch this, sit in on it if you want" and then stick in something you want to watch... they'll still be exposed to it.

I remember watching the Wizard of Oz every year when it would come on, and it was fascinating and lovely.

But... honestly, they're *used* to the whole fantastic everything. Because they have known NOTHING else.

Also slower paced movies are difficult to sit through, and almost anything made before the 90s was waaaaaaay slower than most after.

I mean, cases in point, 2001, Westworld, Andromeda Strain - brilliant and highly lauded movies that launched a lot of careers, and they are all *extremely* slow paced.

When I was *little*, we had a black and white tv, so... I mean, I know from slow.

I don't hate old movies because I'm young, it's just that trends shift.

However, I still love the old Twilight Zone show!

If you try to force it they'll just grow up hating old movies even more.

I grew up as a child of the 90s and I dont remember having an issue with old slow paced films. I watched 2001 for the first time when I was 9 years old. I didnt understand it at all, but I remember being mesmerized by it. I also loved movies like midway and Tora Tora Tora

I also loved star trek tng when I was a kid and you dont get more slow paced then that show

If your kids refuse to watch Terminator 2, i would send them away. Clearly broken beyond repair. Its one of the best movies ever made. Imagine getting to eat food made by best cooks in the world, and screaming they want mc donalds stuff...

Total Recall 2012 as your idea of great cinema.

Hahahaha.
My favorite movies growing up were old war movies and old westerns. That was where a young boys heroes back in the day. I mean some of them are kind of inappropriate. Like the last 15 minutes of the wild bunch, or what happens to John Wayne at the end of Green Beret.

But I couldn't get enough of those movies. Also old black-and-white horror and sci-fi movies that they used to play on Sundays. Also old kung fu movies. My mom and I actually used to bond over those.
Films today are nothing but sound bites of lots of single sentences, flashes of colour, movement and shapes.

Movie and tv makers arent pandering to the old meaning it suggests they view todays audience of low attention capacity. So if they grow up viewing this material then its no wonder they cant handle older material where attention to story,to detail is everything in a movie with no parlour tricks.
