Underrated: Fighting games
Underrated: Roguelike (traditional / old-school ones)
I think it's easy to say that first- / third-person shooters are (and have been) the big thing for a long time. It doesn't even need to be explained; if you know gaming, that should sound obvious.
As for underrated, I would say that Rogue, and games that replicate its particular style, are the sort that have pretty much no appeal outside of the people that already play them. From my (minimal) experience, I have found that they feel very archaic and confusing. The only one I have been able to pick up and enjoy is Tangledeep, which was designed with the specific intend of being accessible to more players.
Underrated: Metroidvania
Underrated: Arcade Racers.
Tbh I don't think any genre is over or underrated, they particular games however can be.
FPS shooters; like CSGO
Moba
F2P / P2W games
Sim racing. (Not Project cars, lol.)
Underrated: All genres that I like that are not getting games on a regular basis.
Just in case someone needs a blueprint for the answer.
Seriously, I don't think there are really 'overrated' genres. I can't deny that there are days where I am dissappointed that some theme I like is getting another multiplayer game or a tower defence or visual novel game, but I don't believe that makes those genres overrated. There might be a limited timeframe between an oversaturated market and the industry realizing the market is oversaturated, but the times and genres tend to change as time goes by.
The same thing goes for underrated genres. A few years back, I would have said turn based strategy, party based western rpgs or even visual novel style adventures, but that changed. I guess other genres I might (or might not) miss will come back in time, for a time, too.
For a while now miss a new Mech-Warrior style simulator (single player) or a new take on the Tactival Action + RTS style like Battle Zone.
Underrated: Racing games.
Underrated: Offline Singleplayer games with immersive playability
Underrated - bullet hell shoot em ups
Underrated - Flight sims. Although they've been making a comeback, but nothing to the scale of FreeSpace 2.
Underrated: Battle Racers
