If you're using a vertical slot toaster, sure.

I use a toaster oven.

Well, yes I am. Toaster Oven butter before. Vertical Toaster, after.

Mostly because I don't want to have to throw flaming toasters out the kitchen 3 times a week.

It is not something I eat but my understanding is that the butter is spread on to the bread after it has been toasted. Anything else is simply barbaric.

not owning a toaster.. nor did my parents..

if I want toast I grill it in my oven..
or I fry it in a pan..
both need a little butter applied before roasting.
