Clapping is weird
Ain't it?

I wonder if clapping in appreciation is universal? I mean, it probably is now since Hollywood reaches every corner of the planet. I know Beatniks snapped their thumbs instead of clapping.

FYI a thumb is used in the process but its called snapping your fingers.

Good concussive percussion will always get someone's attention. But anything that sounds like it will also. This just lets the performers know that the audience is out there.

Oh and there's that little group of special snowflakes that have declared clapping of hands to be racist or something... so you have to use Jazz Hands.

It is, same like shaking hands, waving hands etc. Probably all the rituals people are exercising.

Yeah isn't shaking hands to prove you're not armed? lol

All those things are tought through culture. You give a thumbs up, but in Russia they could be offended by this gesture.
It´s complicated.

Clapping in Old Tibetan communities was used to ward of evil spirits.

Don't know. One could still hold something in the other hand, or have the hidden blade ;)

The shaking of hands is the same thing. Some people don't want to shake hands. It could imply assumed superiority or dominance from the initiator. Or it could mean something else. It could be they just want to hold your hand. It's better to not think about this stuff too much. You'll go insane.

if it hasn't be said already

"What is the sound of one hand clapping?" "If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" ect.

Shrug, I don't understand clapping entirely as a way to show appretiation. But I guess its non-personal enough as far as gestures go almost no one has issue doing it.
