Clapping is weird
Ain't it?

I wonder if clapping in appreciation is universal? I mean, it probably is now since Hollywood reaches every corner of the planet. I know Beatniks snapped their thumbs instead of clapping.

if it hasn't be said already

"What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

Snapping your fingers.

Don't know. One could still hold something in the other hand, or have the hidden blade ;)

The shaking of hands is the same thing. Some people don't want to shake hands. It could imply superiority or dominance from the initiator, when the other party follows. Or it could mean something else. It could be they just want to hold your hand. It's better to not think about this stuff too much. You'll go insane.
Maybe it's too late for that ;P

At least I can comfort myself with Kurosawa's words - "In a mad world only the madman is truly sane" :P

"What is the sound of one hand clapping?" "If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" ect.

Shrug, I don't understand clapping entirely as a way to show appretiation. But I guess its non-personal enough as far as gestures go almost no one has issue doing it.
It's done by a lot of people together to make the clapping noise. Instead of silence or crickets.
You may high-five someone. Its only one of "your" hands so it counts.
What's even more weird is how people will show up to an event with an arsenal of
fruit just to throw at the performers if they are not satisfied.

I've heard in some cultures it's a sign of disdain.
You have to clap whenever the teleprompter tells you to or else you don't get the 100 dollars they promised you before the show started.
You never stop clapping once you start.

It’s just the time intervals between clapping change.
