Is it still worth buying a ps2 in 2018?

I was thinking about getting a ps2, they cost around $20 NZD where I live, and at my local cash converters (a pawn shop we have here in NZ), there are plenty of PS2 games being sold there.

is it still worth buying a ps2 today?

The PS2's library is pretty much unmatched in gaming history (in my opinion). It sat in a sweet spot where video games were technically sophisticated, but not so much so that the cost of making them meant that you only got safe bets. So yeah, you've got a library of at least 200+ stellar games (and thousands more of varying quality) and you can get most of them very cheap (after a bit of hunting).

However, a lot of PS2s are in a bit of physical decline and finding one in full working order is getting harder and harder. The lens that reads the discs degrades very slowly and PS2's that have been used a LOT have trouble reading some discs. So be really really careful who you buy from!

It still has less shovelware than the Wii.

Its so sad that people are willing to make poorly made games for a quick buck, since a lot of parents would usually buy these games for their kids, as a lot of them didn't know how bad these games were, as they were generally based on kids movies and tv shows (although some games based on movies and tv shows were good, such as spongebob:bfbb and star wars battlefront II)

Well thanks to having better access to the modem internet, and huge amount of people willing to do gameplays across a whole range of games, it's easier to get reviews, and see how the game works to help make your decision to get the game, or not.

oh and also make sure the discs/videogames you're buying don't have scratches on them. im not sure if pawn shops allow you to test video games but if they do make sure to test them unless you're 100% sure they work.

also, make sure you have a memory card. always important.

I don't think you can load/save directly to/from it (you need to copy your saves from "System Configuration"), but it's also a good idea to also get a hard drive if you get a fat model. Some games can install to it decreasing load times, and although I didn't do it, I hear it's easy to mod the console so that all games can be installed, decreasing load times and allowing you to not need to find the disc every time you want to play it.

i'll try look for a good deal for a ps2, at my local cash converters (a pawn shop we have here in NZ) as no other physical store sells ps2s.

It's not quite that simple. You can install games to a softmodded fat PS2's HDD but they will suffer issues like stuttering audio and stuttering FMV's. From experience loading times are about the same.

Also, games that used dual-layered DVD's will straight up not work past a certain point if loaded from an HDD.

Actually, near every game I tried by loading off an HDD had some sort of issue. Games that came in Dual-Layered DVD's straight up didn't work.

Using USB drives also don't provide better results as the PS2 uses USB 1.1 so you'll get similar issues due to the low read rate.


I just gave up and soldered in a Modbo 4.0 back then so that I could load my copies instead.
