Is it still worth buying a ps2 in 2018?
I was thinking about getting a ps2, they cost around $20 NZD where I live, and at my local cash converters (a pawn shop we have here in NZ), there are plenty of PS2 games being sold there.

is it still worth buying a ps2 today?

Because it's cheap and it has two games I want.
In that case, what are you waiting for? :)
Me, to get off my butt and be wiling to find and then to pay for them. :P

If you really like the Playstation 2, sure. Why would you settle for that though?
I didn't know buying something new to play games on counted as "settling".

No, there's far better consoles than the PS2 out there.
The consoles may be better, but are the games?
i guess yeah

First of all it's not new, and you can play a lot of these games on PSnow. I'm making a point, it doesn't mean I'm attacking anything you're doing - just think of the implications of what I'm saying.
isn't psnow really bad though

why would i spend $400 nzd on a console i don't even own to play ps2 games that I can play on the original hardware for only around $40?

not only that but it's a subscription and i doubt that you technically own the games. even then, the entire library isn't available

nope, don't own any of the ps2 games, aside from ports that have been put on steam, such as half life and battlefront II
The PS2's library is pretty much unmatched in gaming history (in my opinion). It sat in a sweet spot where video games were technically sophisticated, but not so much so that the cost of making them meant that you only got safe bets. So yeah, you've got a library of at least 200+ stellar games (and thousands more of varying quality) and you can get most of them very cheap (after a bit of hunting).

However, a lot of PS2s are in a bit of physical decline and finding one in full working order is getting harder and harder. The lens that reads the discs degrades very slowly and PS2's that have been used a LOT have trouble reading some discs. So be really really careful who you buy from!

those thousands of other games you were talking about, are they shovelware, because I have heard that the PS2 was home to a majority of shovelware because of its popularity, just like the wii had so much shovelware.

i meant owning the games by having psnow. it's more of a service thing and you don't technically own the games by using the service. at least i think that's the case.

i would use psnow, however I have no playstation console at all, so i wouldn't be using psnow unless I bought a PS4, which i probably won't.
