When will star citizen be finished?
Lets make a prediction since it’s the 10th anniversary already.
I say in 2030
What do you think?

It has to be admitted, though, that Start Citizen is starting to look a heck of a lot like a duck. It's talking like a duck, it's walking like a duck...

Sure, all those updates and talks and interviews and tech-demos, sure they're cool an' all... But, so are ducks.

Until, that is, one gets them home, slides the silk aside, and turns down the lights only to discover that it's a duck.

If one had to market the "game" and convince someone to invest in buying it by only telling that person what has happened so far and not once mentioning the game's name... it'd look like the biggest darn duck one had ever seen.

Star Citizen is doing exactly what so very many "MMO Scams" have done before it, just biggerer, louder, and more betterer. Is it a scam? Probably not, but it sure as heck looks like a duck.

As I said.
Nobody is forcing anyone to spend large amount of cash on a luxury goods like a videogame here.. Infact you can get to try Star Citizen for a rather low amount and sometimes even for free.

Not every game delievers what they start out with. That is why people should always pay extra attention in terms of how much they spend on games not fully developed (or other products for that matter) since they write that "its subject for change"

People always have a choice, those the blindly spend large amounts of cash on stuff like ships in a fictional game or 500 lootcases in CSGO, obviously have the economy to do that or are in need of help (some do suffer from addictions to gambling etc after all)

But the games themselves are not doing anything illigal and are not knowingly trying to obtain your cash without giving you anything, if they were and you had evidence about it, I would urge you to report the product (products on steam can easily be reported on the storefront ie)

I don't think anyone said anything illegal is going on. It doesn't have to be illegal to be a scam. I can tell people I talk to their dead relatives, get them to pay me to tell them what they want to hear, and there's nothing illegal about it.
I'm still scamming them though.

And at a certain point with the amount of money star citizen has taken without delivering a product so far, I'd consider it a scam. Again, I never claimed what they did was illegal, I'm actually a big proponent of free market capitalism and that's exactly what star citizen is doing, but I can still warn people that spending the outrageous amounts on star citizen is a scam, the same way I can tell someone buying a Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich for 30k is also a scam (while I wouldn't consider it illegal either).

Free market is just that, and I think anyone should be allowed to spend their money on whatever they want or charge whatever they want, but also people can stage boycotts and put out information warning of scams against practices that are predatory by nature and the market can regulate itself that way.

Taking emotion out of the equation, logic dictates that spending 27k on pdfs that still haven't produced the promised product 4 years later is very likely a scam, or at the very least could use people warning against falling for the product at this point.

Again there is no defined cut off point to where it goes from legit businesses practices and a scam in this context, especially if the seller is still insisting on the product coming yet has no timetable or accounting for the money gone into it.

In a regular investment situation, most if not all of the investors would have already asked for their money back. The investors in this case (customers buying a product that has not been delivered) cannot even ask for their money back.

This is exactly what a duck would say, though...

I'm not saying SC is fraudulent or illegal or is stealing people's money. YET.

I'm saying, however, that it looks a heck of a lot like it's fraudulent, like it may have illegal intent, like it might actually be trying to steal people's money...

In short, it looks a heck of a lot like a duck.

You can defend against that by making the claim of "choice is the ultimate arbiter of victimhood" but that just doesn't hold true. Someone who is scammed actually made a choice, too, right?

And, reporting someone for not doing a thing when they said they are not yet going to do it... Well, that's not really an option, is it?

Both of these suggestions are non-solutions to a possible problem that, as of yet, doesn't exist. But, it certainly looks like it's there... quietly quacking its warning.

It "looks like" a duck. It "walks like" a duck. It's getting pretty close, now, to being a duck.

I have no emotion one way or another about star citizen. I actually think it sounds like a cool concept. But over a decade of taking in money and then selling grossly over priced dlc that required you to pay 1k just to even see what is in it, does not need emotion to sit back and think, wait is this a scam? And if not, when does it become a scam?

I think the entirety of Elite Dangerous will get mapped out before Star Citizen gets released. I don't even have that great of interest in either or. I just liked Freelancer and occasionally binge people who won't shut up about either or.

Like that guy who slandered Vinny. You know the one.

Nobody is forcing anyone, but if You advertise certain things of which other people say it will never be possible in that time (or ever) - when they say it is possible or simply say nothing to any critics, while not delivering, it´s borderline. When they give new release dates - and won´t release - for years - it´s borderline. This kind of advertising needs to stop, because usually if You advertise something and the product won´t do what´s advertised - You´ll have a right to get Your money back, because it´s a lie or scam. And this is just one point about it. The referral program is more than questionable, too. Then it´s tax money involved and threatening letters to prevent publishing certain critiques or deleting them - but those are of course just individual problems, like always in those cases. It´s not about the company. And as always there is no illegal action if nobody goes to the court with it - but they probably make sure, that they will win the case, or are at least able to argue within certain laws. I´m almost sure that they would lose with this business model in some countries. Perhaps not, because digital products are very new - and people in charge don´t know about it existing, just as hearsay.

It will probably be a few more years.

Just like DNF it will be finished eventually. I can only hope it doesn't flop at launch like DNF did.

I love spaceflight sims like Freelancer. I enjoyed Elite Dangerous too. But I hate the abomination that it becomes when they try to add human bodies to the mix so it becomes a FPS when you leave your ship.

It's like duck-taping a pig to a crow and launching it out of a catapult to create a flying pig. All it does is make a mess when it hits the ground.

Commit to the spaceflight sim part and do that the absolute best you can. No "walking inside stations" no "exploring alien worlds on hoverbikes" or whatever else the fanbase wants.

Just ships. In space. Do that and give me UI's to interact with NPC's and accept quests, do trading, that kind of thing.

I can't really play SC on my current rig and will need to upgrade before it launches. But they've spent a lot of time on the planetary environments. I can't help but wonder if it was wasted development time?

In Freelancer you spent the entire game in your cockpit. Story progression happened in cutscenes where you saw people walking around outside their ships but you had no direct control over them. That's fine. It avoided this whole mess with two different types of game being duck-taped together.

My friend put SO MANY hours into Freelancer. He was damn good at it too lol.

So lets stick to the logics behind what we got. I am yet to see anyone providing anything valid in terms of arguments, about Star Citizen being a scam. I have seen emotional subjective dislike, from an individual point of view, but that is not worth anything in the grand debate, nor valid in terms of arguments.

Despite the updates, earlier this year, fan frustration around the game peaked as one Reddit user reported the company to the UK Advertising Standards Agency for a lack of transparency over its sale of "concept ships" for the game. Following the complaint, which claimed that the studio had misled its customers by not clearly indicating that the concept ships on sale weren't actually available in the game, the studio was issued with an Advice Notice from the ASA explaining that it must be more transparent in the future.

Why would they ever finish it? People throw money at it anyway, no reason for them to stop that.

Six months after Chris Roberts is removed from leadership. Or never if he stays. The man can not say no to feature creep and is the driving reason of most of it.

Worked at Origin Studios and founded Digital Anvil, so, Wing Commander, Privateer, FreeLancer, and StarLancer. But back then he had bosses, budget and tech restraining him. Now he has no boss, the tech can do pretty much anything he dreams of and he feels his budget is unlimited.

Digital Anvil got bought by Microsoft and they forced him to ship Freelancer in a reduced state.
He was producer and lead designer on Wing Commander (*). His brother was the lead on the Privateer series. He directed the Wing Commander movie and produced a whole load of other stuff.

He's been trying to make a living universe in a space opera/starfighter since the 90's and as long as there's nothing to force his hand to release something, he's going to keep iterating and spending time and effort and ♥♥♥♥ nobody would notice like bedsheet physics.
