Why do female athletes dress so skimpily?

I was just watching women's long jump championships for some reason and I noticed that the women all wear WAY too revealing outfits, like they wear the smallest shorts imaginable and then they pull it up their butt crack so their whole butt cheeks stick out. The male athletes don't do this, so is it just to entertain straight male viewers or something? It's just so cringe and embarrassing to watch as someone who isn't into that, I mean how can they expect anyone to take them seriously as athletes when they're running around flashing their whole butt like that? And they do this is almost all women's sports not just long jump.

Offer female athletes a choice of uniform. One more modest and practical, and one skimpy like we have today. Or offer a range of lengths for shorts and such, so an athlete can pick anywhere from the tiniest bikini to the long baggy shorts and an oversized t-shirt, and everywhere in between.

How many would pick a modest uniform, and how many a skimpy one?

I hypothesize that many athletes are often proud of their bodies, and given the choice will want to show it off.

This is just me, but I'd prefer skirts and/or bikinis just because of how uncomfortable I find wearing shorts and pants to be. Though I just have sensitivity issues with clothes and my thighs.

Sure. She's been in and out of hospital all her life and had to deal with the shame that comes from losing her hair from chemo. But you know what? She laughs about it, she moves on, she doesn't sit around playing the oppression Olympics because bad things happen. Get off your high horse and grow up. They get an edge by shaving with results in reduced drag. Not by a massive amount but on a competitive level it's rather important.

Also take pole jumpers for example, don't want anything that can catch on to something and rip the bar down when it's about mm and cm of getting over the bar.

Because apparently sports shorts and sleeveless cotton tops were not enough for the purposes of hosting 'entertainment' sports. I wouldn't blame the lady athletes, it would be their coach and the event holders who'd make them wear the revealing team clothing.

The organization does that.
And it's not only the whole big athletes thing, looks at some school athletes uniform.
The design is very different between gender.

Seems a little bit of flame war topic but I'll take part. Personally I don't care about the dresses. Is it bad that the athletes wants to look good?

The main thing in professional sports is that the dress has to be something that does not harm the performance. And if it would be possible, to be something that gives more advantage or helps or supports it. Part of professional sports, is the looks. It gives the athlete confidence and mental advantage over others. Sometimes it is actually quite a lot. Look how powerful, beautiful, good looking and strong I am. There's no way you can beat me! Then the dresses which are the most skin tight and revealing are the ones that serves that the best. When you put the most best on the same line, the athletes will use any advantage they can get. And believe me mental advantage is a brutal thing. The ultimate thing about the dress is, that it has to serve the athlete. Not too hot, not too cold, not too tight or it has to be tight enough to support... etc etc etc.

Well put! I've known many professional athletes in my lifetime. That is same thing I have heard from them.

If that was the truth then male athletes would wear that too, but they don't. Keep telling yourself this lie ladies, meanwhile everyone will continue to have no respect for female athletes or female sports since it's nothing but a meat show for men.
