There are only a few games that I really love and have a female protagonist....
Eternal darkness... this is the only one I have nothing to complain about... for some reason in this case I do not care, and there are also many other protagonists as well, and most of them are males, not just the "main" female one. But even when I must play with her I'm ok with that. For some reason I really like playing with her, as much as I usually like to play with male characters. The chapter with that dancer girl is a bit annoying. She is rather unlikable in my opinion. But the differences in personality of the various characters is part of the greatness of that game so it's ok to not like some of them I guess... but I must say that dancer girl was particularly annoying. Alex instead is very good.
NaissanceE... well, in this case I believe that they decided to have a female protagonist just to name her "Lucy", simply because this is the established name of the first human being we know of so that was just a choice for symbolic reasons I think... and the game is in first person and very immersive so besides the iconic "Lucy is lost" introduction in the beginning it is very easy to forget that you are supposed to play as a female. You are supposed to play as yourself, I think it was just important for the developer to give the main character that particular name, so that character had to be female.
Metroid prime. I never liked other Metroid games, but with Meroid Prime 1 Retro Studios really made a masterpiece. It is not my favourite game of all time but I really enjoyed it. In this case it is a bit more obvious that you are playing as a woman, NaissanceE is meant to be YOUR adventure, but Metroid games have always had a female protagonist even if Metroid Prime is in first person. It is very immersive but not in such a personal way.
I did not like too much the fact that I was playing as a woman but I've been able to enjoy that game anyway.
Other than that in most cases I just avoid games that force me to play as a female protagnist. They are just unattractive for me, not fun, not entertaining.
But I have nothing against those games. When I was a kid I remember I felt overwhelmed by the expectations society had from me as a male. I felt anxious, and scared, and in danger, because of how society perceived us and because of the different treatment society had for females I felt discriminated against. So even for me I think that a more "equal" representation in games is a good thing, it is a way to change the mindset of people. Because believe me it has been very stressful to face all this unwanted (at least by me) social pressure. So I agree that having female caracters in games is important too, but personally I don't have fun with them. The best thing is probably to include both and give players the ability to choose which one they want to play with. Personally I'll pick the male.
I'm on the weird side, though, in that, while I'm fine with playing as either sex, I dislike having physical character customization in my games, with even just the ability to choose the character's sex being capable of drastically lowering my enjoyment of a game. Not that I haven't played games with those features and enjoyed them, I have, it's just that I've noticed through my years of gaming that I enjoy myself vastly more when I'm playing as a physically set character.
Why that is I don't think I can fully say, but I think part of the reason is that physically set characters feel more like people to me and feel more apart of their games' worlds than physically customizable MCs do for me. Playing as a physically customizable MC often times just makes me feel like I'm playing as a doll or a manikin/robot I (maybe) dressed up rather than a person, and I think that, for me, leads to a feeling of disconnection.
Everybody connects with games differently, and that's okay.
Well yeah depends what kinda Player you are. The more casual player just creates a character but role players create avatars of themselves. Both ways are alright but if a game offers you the option it’s meant to create your own avatar in the first place. There are also preset characters which are avatars for the player like in dragon quest etc

Take a guess.
Well it depends on the game... the the protagonist is male then I play it, if the protagonist is female I play it...
It's funny how games have had to add female versions in games but if the protagonist is female they don't feel the need to add male versions in the game.
"Rules for thee, but not for me" it seems once again...
Most importantly videogames are meant to be entertaining so everybody should feel free to decide what features they want in a game according to their taste. There are people who react in extremely uncivil and nasty ways if they will find out that you prefer to play as a male character it is just important to keep in mind that those people are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and don't deserve any consideration.
Since you don't know the story before you finish the game, you really have no hope of designing a character that works for it.
And that, of course, is assuming your creator options are not all garbage, which in most creators, they are.
Game takes place in modern day and I'm scorlling through the pants looking for dadgum blue jeans. Would you like khakis, or slacks, or bell bottoms, or cargo shorts, or medieval greaves for some reason, or normal shorts, or how about leather pants, or kevlar pants, look look these slacks are three cm shorter--in this fashion world, this is a big deal--or how about some MC Hammer parachute pants, or some smaller variation that the fashion world thinks aren't just MC Hammer parachute pants simply because they're smaller, or what about these pants made of that fake denim that's actually just felt, that they use in cheap Mario Halloween costumes but everyone can tell by looking isn't denim--would you like a pair of pants made from that?
I would say it's more than a character design issue for me, but you do make a solid point and I can definitely see that effecting people.
P.S, that whole rant about pants got a laugh out of me, good job
