Might be seen as the basic choice but there's a good reason for it tbh. He's the leader (except in that one cartoon and that one rap), he's usually the wise one, and between he or Raph are usually the strongest combatant too, unless they play it like they're all equal.

Least favorite is Raphael. I do like that he often has the most complex emotions, but I don't like that he's such a hothead.

Leonardo leads.
Donatello does machines.
Raphael is cool, but rude.
Michelangelo is a party dude.

They're also colored to match their personalities but equipped opposite their personalities.

Leonardo is the blue one: level-headed but has the most aggressive weapon--the katanas.
Michelangelo is the orange one: a total goof-off, but has the most complicated weapon--the nunchucks.
Donatello is the purple one: the smartest, but has the simplest weapon--the staff.
Raphael is the red one--aggressive, but has the most defensive weapon--the said.

I like to think Splinter did this on purpose to make them develop into more well rounded individuals.
