Video-games with Galleons as a playable ship?
These things: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galleon

"Sid Meier's Pirates" and "Pirates of the Burning Sea" both have Galleons as playable ships. Are there any other games that let you sail these vessels? I've heard that "Sea of Thieves" has them, but I haven't played that game yet.

I wouldn't be interested in those, my interest is in maritime ships, not space ships ;)

Well the only one I know is SM Pirates, which you already mentioned. But in those games, like real life, the galleons are easily over whelmed by smaller ships they can't hit.

The War Galleon in "Sid Meier's Pirates" is a reasonably solid warship.

Video-games have different ways of representing these vessels. Often they're just depicted as sluggish trade ships (which many were in real life), but you also sometimes see the "militarized" versions that lack speed and manoeuvrability but make up for it in firepower and durability. Think of it like the "tank" class of renaissance ships ;) In real-life, Galleons proved their worth as combat vessels on more than one occasion, including the smaller "race built galleons" of men like Francis Drake.

In either case, I'm interested in both the merchant and fighting versions of these vessels, if there's a game where you can play as them (like "Sid Meier's Pirates" allows you to).

Oh, I totally get that, and I'm sorry if I derailed the thread. I just love the crossover with the old ships, and even the battle tactics, and I wanted to mention it.

And yes, Rebel Galaxy is amazing. So much so, you can only attack other ships broadside.

If the subject-matter doesn't interest me, I won't play the game. I'm not that much of a "gamer" in that sense.

No worries, you didn't de-rail anything. Everyone's got their own tastes.

I'm a big "Age of Sail" fan. And, there's a very disappointing lack in the number of games that focus on this great era.

There are a decent number, but not enough IMO, of games that focus on multi-ship engagements.

The above, as well as some in the Total War series, like "Empire" and "Napoleon." There are also other games under the "Age of Sail" moniker that feature that kind of combat.

Anno 1404 ("Age of Discovery: Venice" in the US) has some RTS combat with Age of Sail ships. Though, Ubi$oft forced a new launcher on the game sometime in the past couple of years that requires one to let Ubi$oft touch one in one's no-no spot, online, now... (I have the pre-Ubisoft-Launcher version, thanks to Steam not allowing customers to be blindsided and allowing customers to retain the products that they purchased rather than allowing developers to make whatever changes they wish.)

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/mk5fn1/what_are_the_best_age_of_sail_games_these_days/

That's got some interesting mentions in it.

I know that there was an Age of Sail game in development that features gameplay where a player can captain/crew their own Age of Sail ship, moving around it in first-person, fighting the ship in combat, and commanding crew or some such, perhaps even a multiplayer experience. BUT - I can't find any reference to the one I'm thinking of. :/ Since I'm an Age of Sail fan, I used to frequently end up trying to discover what offerings are out there, I just haven't had that notion in awhile.

One issue with an Age of Sail game, aside from the must-have feature of good "water" mechanics, is that a "realistic" game would involve a heck of alot of doing "not much." So, it'd have to be a game where one participates in some set-piiece or generated battles or something with a multi-layer view with a campaign map and instanced combat. (Think "Warband At Sea." Which.... would be a killer-awesome gaming experience for Age of Sail fans! :))

Sea of Thieves has them. It's my current favorite game, and I highly recommend it. Although a galleon is a bit trickier for a beginner to play on. It's the biggest ship in the game and requires coordination between the crew to run effectively (not something you're as likely to have if you play with randoms).

I will also warn you that world PvP is allowed. Other players can attack you, kill you, steal your stuff, etc. And while you're still new/learning the game, most PvP encounters are going to be pretty one sided (not in your favor) for a while. If that's going to turn you off, I'd stay away.

Do any of the games you've mentioned feature Galleons as playable ships? I've found other Age of Sail games but they don't always have these vessels as playable. The Galleon was a unique design (really a sort of hybrid vessel, borrowing elements from other ships like the Carrack but being different in their own way), and I'd like to see that represented in more games.

Thanks, I'd had "Sea of Thieves" recommended to me before, but it seems to be multiplayer-only with PVP as a constant threat (as you said), and I don't think that'd be my type of game. When it comes to multiplayer games I prefer ones like "Pirates of the Burning Sea" which allows you to stay in Player vs. AI mode if you wish, rather than being forced to constantly watch your back for other players.

I'm pretty sure Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat had a galleon as the final ship you could upgrade to.

What? Is pirates of the Burning Sea still playable? Bought the game ages ago and dropped it after a month.

I haven't played it in a couple years, but I checked their website and they're still up. It's free as far as I know, though there might be in-game purchases. It was definitely free when I played it anyway.
