Just because it has monsters doesn't make it a Pokemon clone

Its something that always bugged me about monster raising games. Japan clearly has a monster raising genre that didn't just appear with Pokemon, that game just made it popular. I mean here are some of the games I've played that had the clone label thrown on them.

Digimon: Ah, the first victim of the Pokeclone label. Even if it copied Pokemon at sometime in the past, from the first anime at least had better and deeper storytelling that matured as the series went. The games are hit and miss on quality, but every digimon line is useful instead of only a dozen of the little guys.

Monster Racers: A little-known DS game that can be described as a racing game but with monsters. Unlike Pokemon you actively control your monster in the race, and higher stats may help but it truly comes down to terrain mastery. Exotics are special colors that are unavailable through the loyalty color orbs that can appear in just about any monster orb(yeah encounters are avoidable) and are much more frequently encountered.

Let's see. Even if it started off as a clone, Digimon has finally improved its games and the anime has always been more complex and relatable. I just feel now that Pokemon has been losing me, I love the game but the game is feeling too samey. Ultra moon was okay but way too similar to the original moon. Digimon Cyber Sleuth, just feels much meater.

Oh sure I'm not disputing that digimon is likely better. Pokemon had jumped the shark a long time ago and became stale by the gold /silver/crystal era imo. They just have such a big name and are that much bigger of an entity than digimon or other monster anime.

Digimon was always more relatable, I agree. Pokemon every episode is the same, the power of love and friendship conquers over the power of evil and bad guys, every time. You just gotta believe in the power of love and your Pokemon and you're unbeatable.

Hey if it works for most anime. I totally agree and understand.I honestly think they should bring more of the Team Plasma before the reveal and Team Skull's background. I want more villains who are complex and have a goal you can at some point agree with their mission.

I mean if Digimon can go from stop evil human or digimon from harming either worlds, to slightly Evangelion like villian, to guy can no longer logout of the virtual world due to his real body most likely having been taken by body harvesters for the black market. Pokemon doesn't have to go that far, but I do want more exploration of what happens when anybody has access to superpowered animals. Heck I only remember the anime tackling abused Pokemon about three times, and poaching about twice.

digimon lost almost all of its cred once

A. The kids and digimon could just will themself back to existence after dying
B. Tai and the older kids are kicked out because no teen/adults allowed
C. The whole digi egg evolution arc with the dark spires
D. Most of the games were pretty bad/average and felt like rpg maker save a few
E. Making sora x matt, which even the voice actors protested
F. Season two ruining the digital world time difference and difficulty moving between worlds
G. Season two doing a total heel turn and obsessing over no killing
H. Tamers big bads being based on the zodiac (Seriously, that stupid tiger)

Then it commited suicide by making a season where they removed the digimon and made the kids basically power rangers


What made digimon great was the time difference dynamic where you could spend 100 years in the digital world and only a couple hours pass on earth. Every time they went to earth and spent a day, the entire digital world could change.

That it was easy to get trapped there in a life or death survival with only a native to rely on and bond with. And that these bonds were deep and complex vs pokemon. And over time they threw it all away.

Well yokai watch is more myth based and you don't have full control over your party. At least in the first you couldn't stay out at night until you got a Baku to fill in for you.

But if you don't stop the evil, the entire village dies.

Its hard at times to get invested in. And at times it was really hard. I did beat it though.

also going back to this i figured out something pretty neat
the guy who made this made conan detective....what the hell happened

this guy produced a few power ranger series and hunter x hunter as well....i never watched hunter X hunter but damn. he helped with LUPIN TO. i found gold by mistake

One kinda fun monster game at the time was dragon warrior monsters for GBC.

Though its breeding mechanics were bad. For instance to get an egg you have two marry two of your monsters who then leave you forever and leave you with 1 egg.
