Dwarf Fortress is great if you can wrap your head around the complexity.
Watch some YouTube tutorials, grab the noobs starter pack and just give it a go.

Fangames are free and as of late, of superior quality... So much, that if they not surpass the original source, they at least are equal to it. With any of those, you can't go wrong.

Get the original Spelunky and Cave Story off their respective websites. Great games. If you like them, buy the Steam versions, as they are WAY better.
