The press & hold action is not supported by any games that i know of.
Edit:
Sorry about that, I just tested it in a couple of games and the side button stil acted as a stroke/toggle. The REPEAT is apparently a fixed 'repeat this action' and not a true "hold", which repeats for as long as the Repeat Option is set.
My apologies.
It appears that this may not be able to be done without third-party software (which of course many games do not like/allow). Windows Accessibility options may hold the key as well [pun not originally intended].
If I find out something that actually acts as a "hold", I will return.
I appreciate your time either way. If nothing else it ticks your mouse off as another potential dud that won't do what I need. I've tried macros and its what everyone suggests but they don't seem to understand that the repeat option isn't click and hold and doesn't work! I don't know how many different ways I can explain that to retailers but they just don't understand. It's like trying to convince them a triangle and a circle aren't the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shape!
I created another little 'image tutorial' to help find the function and how to configure it:

You literally just 'lean' the mouse wheel itself Left and Right (which might be easy to get used to, as it is intuitive to 'leaning around a corner').
I'm sorry that this doesn't exactly answer your query for the Side Buttons, but hopefully this will help you (and others) in using the mouse for these actions, if anyone desires.

That is actually a very big help thank you. I don't have a mouse with a scroll wheel that tilts although I really would like one as I've always thought it was an excellent idea as there gets to a point where some mice have too many awkwardly placed side buttons that can't be used practically. Part of whats stopped me getting one was that I just assumed that like side-buttons the scroll-tilt buttons would only be able to perform single click functions.
