Then GTA San Andreas
Metal Gear Solid Tactical Espionage Action, could never beat the game when I was a kid.
The operative : No one live forever
No one LIve forever 2 : a spy in H.A.R.M's way
and also Contract J.A.C.K which is happen between the two previous games.
I remember seeing story about night dive studios seeking to obtain the rights to re-release the games but the story went in a copyright nightmares with both the original developers and publishers not really cooperating and saying it's the other party that had the rights of the games.
I always thought they should have just made the game and see who had the actual legal rights in court.
Then just tell the court they will happily pay to license the game as intended.
I still love that game now and bought it on a few different platforms.
Explosions, jumbo mechs and cheesy acting. Love it!

Did a 2001 - 2005 revival in Janury till April. Didn't last long because I guess I am not into gaming anymore, but I finished MoHAA, CoD, Max Payne 1 &2, etc Which is nice. Quit half way GTA 3 because I got bored and ended this nostalgia-trip.
Last week I discovered how to play Black & White, so doing that probably someday as well
My favourite game from early 2000's is still Diablo 2: LoD; I am still playing it combined with Basemod + Plugy. Sometimes very intensive, sometimes a couple of days taking a break.
This game was and still is amazing. The atmosphere is so unique and original. You really felt like colonizing a strange, different planet. And the factions - they actually felt authentic. Best CIV game ever. Tho I didn't like crossfire too much. The base game was better by far.
It's a real shame that beyond earth was so terrible. An absolute letdown.
Stuff I liked the most:
- Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (first proper open world realistic military shooter to later spawn the ArmA series)
- Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed (the first "simcade" NFS game and imo also the best NFS game ever, but only the PC version, the PlayStation one wasn't nearly as good)
- Colin McRae Rally 2.0 (great "simcade" rally game, the PC version looked far better than the PlayStation one, kinda a "Dirt Rally 2.0" of it's time)
- Project I.G.I. (one of the first open world tactical shooters, hard as nails due to no save game option, but one of the first games to make me interested into real-life weaponry)
- Black & White (Lionhead's "god game" masterpiece, it wasn't perfect and could drag on a bit, but the concept was great and it's a game that would certainly deserve a re-release or remaster for modern systems)
- Sacrifice (a very unique RTS game with RPG elements, a pretty magical game)
- Soldier of Fortune (gory one man army arcade military FPS, very fun)
- Serious Sam First & Second Encounter (these two games were for the early 2000s what was DooM and DooM II back in the early 90s)
- Disciples II (superb TBS, great atmosphere and art-style and a game that you can trully sink months or even years into)
- Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2 (both fine action adventures with some great story and fun gameplay)
- Clive Barker's Undying (a cool Unreal Engine powered horror FPS)
- Aliens vs Predator 2 (a very good horror FPS)
- No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 (unique stealthy FPS games with a female protagonist, diverse environments and a funny storyline)
- Half-Life 2 (well it's Half-Life 2, nuff said)
- Counter-Strike Source (a cool remake of C-S in Source engine)
- Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (imo this is the best Hitman game besides Blood Money)
- Blitzkrieg (the first Blitzkrieg was a very good RTS or RTT game with no base building but it had more realism compared to it's peers and consequently more tense gameplay)
- Rune (the gory Norse mythology hack and slasher running on the first Unreal Engine, I especially liked the multi-player part of it)
- WarCraft III (the OG WCIII was a very good RTS game that put the RTS genre into 3D graphics and spawned various "game changer" mods like DOTA)
- MDK 2 (a unique and fun 3rd person shooter with some puzzle elements)
- Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (a top game in the C&C series, alongside Tiberian Sun, it would certainly deserve the same treatment as Tiberian Dawn and OG Red Alert)
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein (fun reboot of Wolfenstein with diverse levels and unique monsters but it did feel a bit too much like a polished Quake III mod to me, the MP part of it, Enemy Territory, was highly popular back then too)
- Unreal Tournament 2004 (initially, I didn't like the game too much because I didn't like those Battlefield-style modes with vehicles and large maps, but as a deathmatch game, it's very good and has tons of content)
- DooM 3 (the graphics and atmosphere were amazing for the time but gameplay a bit boring)
- Deus Ex (I'm not a huge fan of it but I recognize it's importance)
- Max Payne (I had mixed feelings on it but it for sure was one of the first games with mature themes and the unique time slowdown feature)
- Diablo II (I actually played a far Eastern copy of it instead, Throne of Darkness, but I recognize it's importance)
And I'm sure I forgot to mention some, but early 2000s certainly was a good time for PC gaming.
EDIT: maybe I should mention that initially, I wasn't too fond of Half-Life 2 either, as I didn't enjoy it as much as the OG Half-Life, but it's certainly a good game. I also played something else instead of CSS back in those times, but I also recognize it as a fun and important game.
